Als je aan Egypte denkt, wat komt er dan als eerste in je op? Het is moeilijk je iets anders voor te stellen dan de verbazingwekkende omvang van de piramides en de monumentale Grote Sfinx van Gizeh. Deze archeologische wonderen bevinden zich in het piramidecomplex van Gizeh, ook bekend als de Necropolis van Gizeh of het Plateau van Gizeh, ongeveer 13 km ten zuidwesten van Cairo. De piramides van Gizeh en de Grote Sfinx, die sinds 1979 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de UNESCO staan, trekken miljoenen bezoekers uit de hele wereld.
De piramides van Gizeh in Egypte bestaan uit 3 enorme piramides, de piramide van Menkaure, de piramide van Khafre en de piramide van Khufu, waarvan de laatste vanwege zijn immense hoogte ook wel gewoon de Grote Piramide van Gizeh wordt genoemd. Alle piramides werden tijdens de vierde dynastie van het oude Egypte gebouwd voor de toenmalige heersende farao's waarnaar ze dan ook vernoemd zijn. Niemand weet met zekerheid hoe ze precies zijn gebouwd, maar één ding is zeker: de piramides van Gizeh bewaren nog steeds trouw de ware essentie van Egypte.
Een sluier van mysterie omringt ook de torenhoge Grote Sfinx van Gizeh die waakt over de graven aan de oostzijde van het piramidecomplex van Gizeh. Het wereldberoemde kalkstenen beeld van een liggende sfinx is een van de oudste, grootste en beroemdste beeldhouwwerken ter wereld. De meesten geloven dat het hoofd van het beeld is gemodelleerd naar de Egyptische farao Khafre, hoewel de neus later om onbekende redenen is verdwenen. Niettemin blijft de Grote Sfinx een prachtig symbool voor Egypte.
