Once you leave the Turtle Hatchery behind, you will venture to Balapitiva for your chance to go on a lovely Boat Safari in Madu River. Balapitiya is a little southern town lying in marshy wetlands. The area is a high bio-diversity zone that relies on the lagoon created by Madu River as it flows into the Indian Ocean. Your safari will take you on a ride down the river. You will get to see the dense mangrove forest that grows along the marshy banks of the river and the forms of wildlife that call the roots home. Your guide will also take you to some of the larger free standing islands on Madu River. The tour was very well organized and met expectations. Unfortunately the fish market was closed (Sunday), so we had to rely on our fishing luck, which also worked thanks to the careful guide. Unfortunately, the weather conditions were not so good that we could not fish in the deeper water, where larger fish would have been expected. The tour with the catamaran was also very interesting, but it would have been useful to point out that normal sun protection is not sufficient. You are completely in the sun all the time, so pack a cloth for protection or at least 50 sunscreen. On the final tour of the lagoon, there were still many animals and the mangroves to see, partly how the fishing families live. Overall recommended, especially Norman as a guide.

Booked this, thoroughly enjoyed - managed to see all the animals listed (except a bear). Lots of driving, but car was clean, comfortable and air conditioned. The company was accommodating and we asked to start at 8am, (instead of 9:30) and this wasn’t a problem.

Very well planned itinerary. We thoroughly enjoyed our day at the safari. Aarun was really friendly. Totally recommend spending a day at Willapattu if you are in Negombo
