Barcelona: Montserrat Tour, Monastery & Optional Wine/Lunch

1. Barcelona: Montserrat Tour, Monastery & Optional Wine/Lunch

Experience an unforgettable guided group tour to Montserrat, Catalonia's most famous mountain range. Take in the beauty of its natural rolling landscape and discover the history and traditions of its medieval monastery. After your bus journey from Barcelona, board the cogwheel train up to the monastery and admire the beautiful nature and iconic multi-peaked mountain range of Montserrat. Once at the monastery, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical center of the complex.  Learn about the rich history of the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, an 11th-century monastery that still functions to this day, with over 70 monks. Entry to the monastery is included in the tour price. Use the allotted free time to wander freely and visit the famous Black Madonna and see paintings by Picasso, El Greco, and Dali at the Montserrat Museum. During your free time, you can also ride the funicular train up the side of the mountain to get even better viewpoints of the monastery.  Travelers who booked the half-day tour option will return to Barcelona after the visit to Montserrat. If you chose a full-day tour option, you'll continue toward a beautiful boutique winery. Arrive at the winery and, depending on the food option you booked, enjoy a light tapas or multi-course lunch. Admire amazing views of the winery and Montserrat mountains as you feast on traditional foods of the region. After your meal, wander around the vineyards, learn about the wine-making process, and enjoy a wine tasting session, before traveling back to Barcelona.

Montserrat & Cava Winery Small Group Day Tour

2. Montserrat & Cava Winery Small Group Day Tour

Embark on a guided day trip from Barcelona to Montserrat and the Penedès wine-growing region by minivan. Visit the monastery and the Museum of Monserrat, listen to Europe's oldest children's choir, walk through the mountain range's many paths, and visit a winery - this tour has it all. There will be plenty of free time to explore Montserrat on your own, but a visit to the sanctuary where the Moreneta is housed is a must. Pilgrims and other visitors have climbed the mountain to visit this sanctuary for nearly 1,000 years. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the fascinating Museum of Montserrat, and browse its collections that range from the Archaeology of the Biblical East to Modern Painting and Sculpture. A highlight of visiting Montserrat is listening to the voices of Europe’s oldest children’s choir, La Escolania de Montserrat. There are numerous walking and climbing trails on the mountain, ranging from easy strolls to serious hikes. Each trail offers a different perspective on the surrounding landscape, dotted with small chapels and hermitages.  If you'd rather not walk at all, then another option is to take one of the 2 rack railways or the cable car, which also provides stunning views of the area. After the morning in Montserrat, the tour heads to Penedès, a wine-growing region where you'll stop by the Cavas Codorníu winery to view the vast wine cellars and taste some of the wineries' renowned products. You'll tour the winery and see how this sparkling wine is produced, from pressing the grapes to fermentation in the vast cellars. No winery visit would be complete without a taste of the product, so at the end of the tour, you'll have a chance to try some of the best Cava the region produces.

Upon arrival at the monastery, northwest of the city, learn about the lives of the monks in the monastery and sacred mountain. Visit the Museum de Montserrat and see a collection of artifacts that range from Egyptian mummies to canvasses by Picasso. Although much of the collection was lost in the Napoleonic War, the museum continued to add to its collection, and the museum is now home to important works of 20th-century Catalan art. See archaeological finds from Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt and Palestine. Admire old paintings from the 13th to 18th centuries by artists such as Morales, El Greco, and Caravaggio. Fall in love with the Renaissance architecture of the 16th-century basilica. Go to the atrium and sacristy, and see the permanent collection of images of the Virgin Mary. If you book the option that includes entrance to the Monastery, you will enjoy a liquor tasting.

We had a great time on this tour! Mariana, our guide was great - she was knowledgeable, friendly, patient and answered all our questions. Her smile and energy is infectious. When the serving staff at lunch was short staffed, the guides stepped in to serve our food and clean up, hence going above and beyond to make sure we have a great experience. The transportation was also very comfortable. We loved the tour in Monteserrat and having lunch at the winery. Only thing we wish we had some more free time at Montesserat.

Montserrat was breathtaking! I was blown away by the beauty of the Monastery, nature hikes, and the history of the place! When I went there was no line to see the Black Madonna from the lower part of the church. I also appreciated the accessibility of the Monastery and their offerings of food in the cafeteria! It was great getting to support the Monastery by purchasing food and goods that were made by the monks and nuns.

beautiful place. wished we had more time at the mountains maybe another 30mins longer instead of the stop at Vineyards. seems very rushed. no time to view the Black Madonna ad well. better go on your own instead of v the tour
