From Melbourne: Yarra Valley Wine and Food Day Tour

8. From Melbourne: Yarra Valley Wine and Food Day Tour

Travel to the north-east through the bush laden suburbs of Templestowe, Eltham and Kangaroo Ground to the De Bortoli Vineyard at Dixons Creek. This is an elegant start to the day as you'll enjoy a pairing of selected wines and cheeses. It's then on Yering Station, the site of the first vineyard in Victoria in 1838. You'll enjoy a tasting of their estate wines in the original winery (circa 1859) that also features local artworks and produce. For lunch, you'll adjourn to their stunning restaurant. With its world-class views and cuisine, you’ll have an a la carte selection from which to select your main course meal and glass of wine. After lunch, it's a change of pace with a visit to Payten & Jones, one of the smaller producers in the Yarra Valley. Behn Payten and Troy Jones produce small-batch, approachable wines with a personality that includes the familiar chardonnay and pinot noir, together with syrah and some Mediterranean varietals. The afternoon continues with a visit to the Coldstream Hills Winery at Coldstream. Established by James Halliday, one of Australia’s leading authors and commentators on wine, the wines are beautifully crafted and have enjoyed success at numerous wine shows, especially the chardonnay and pinot noir. The final stop for the day is at the charming Medhurst Vineyard. Established in 1999, the family-owned vineyard of 35 acres has a delightful elevation in the foothills of the Warramate Ranges and produces a small selection of elegant table wines. On days when Coldstream Hills and Medhurst are not open (Tue, Wed & Thu) visits would instead be made to Punt Road and/or Oakridge Vineyards.

Once you arrive on the Great Ocean Road, enjoy morning tea along the Surf Coast at your first stop, a perfect way to meet your fellow travelers and your guide for the day. As you wind along this iconic road, each twist and turn reveals new spectacular views of the rugged coastline and into the Otway Ranges that lie inland. Hear the history of the road and its workers as you make a stop at Memorial Arch, also known as the Great Ocean Road sign. Pass through quaint yet popular holiday resort towns before your guide takes you on a wild koala spotting adventure amongst their natural habitat of the eucaluptus trees. Make your way to the historical town of Apollo Bay for a bite of lunch. Stroll the streets, meander the main beach or try some unique and award-winning ice cream. After lunch, the road ventures away from the coastline and into the heart of the Otways National Park. Embark on a guided walk through the crisp fresh air of an ancient rainforest. A truly magical part of the day as you're emersed amongst ferns and the world's second tallest species of tree. The journey continues through the rainforest before reaching the Shipwreck Coast where you will find some of the biggest attractions for the day. Hear about the coastline's most famous shipwreck before stepping down into the gorge at the center of the story of the Loch Ard ill-fated journey. Be towered by the sheer limestone cliffs that form the gorge as you stand on the beach or step into the cold waters of the Southern Ocean at the bottom before reaching the major attraction - the 12 Apostles.
