Full description
Discover the real Morocco on this tour through the Sahara Desert and the Atlas Mountains. This 3-day tour from Marrakech takes you on an adventure through the beautiful scenery of southern Morocco. Enjoy the sunset behind the fascinating sand dunes, and see limestone cliffs, spectacular mountain valleys, and desert landscapes. This journey passes through many interesting towns and villages, where you will get an insight into authentic Moroccan life. Visit the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular location for many film settings. Enjoy a camel ride through the fascinating dunes of Erg Chebbi and admire the palm groves surrounding the Todra Gorge. You also have the option to spend a night under the stars in a nomadic tent in the desert. Detailed Itinerary Day 1: Marrakech – Telouat – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Boumalen Dadès (Dadès Gorge) After an early departure, cross the High Atlas Mountains and reach the 2260m-high Tizi n'Tichka pass. Then continue on to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many films have been shot there including The Mummy, Gladiator, 7 Days in Tibet, Alexander the Great, and Babel. Then continue towards Ouarzazate through the implacable hamada followed by a visit to Kasbah of Taourirt and the film studios. The journey then continues along the Road of 1000 Kasbahs to the Dadès Valley. Along this road we will pass through the fascinating town of Skoura as well as Kalaat M'Gouna, which is known for its roses. After arriving in Boumalne Dadès, there will be dinner and an overnight stay. Distance: 300 km Day 2: Boumalen Dadès – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Arfoud – Merzouga Dunes Morning departure to Merzouga dunes. After Tinghir, visit the groves and then foray into the Todra Gorge. The limestone cliffs seem like an opening carved through the Todra Assif, which has spectacular peaks diving to the bed of the river. The peaks rise up to 300m above the Todra which meanders from its source in the High Atlas mountains. Walk freely through the gorges and palm groves. After lunch, we will continue to the palm groves of Tinjedad, Touroug and Erfoud. The tour will then continue to Merzouga where you will enjoy a camel ride through the fascinating dunes of Erg Chebbi, from which you can observe the sunset. Sand dunes are moving sculptures in the form of draperies whose colors vary according to the intensity of the light. They stand as living walls next to the desert with the highest reaching up to 150m. The night is spent in nomadic tents or Marabou between the dunes of Merzouga or in an air-conditioned room. Distance: 250 km Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Nqob – Tamnougalte – Ouarzazate – Marrakech After breakfast, depart towards the Draa Valley through Rissani and Nqob. Cross the most mysterious desert landscapes, dotted with oases, before continuing to Ouarzazate along the Draa valley. The incredible scenery is bordered with palm groves and extends over a length of 200 km with fortified Ksour. The river continues in a thin stream of water and provides a strange green color in the middle pre-Sahara. After lunch, return to Marrakech. Distance: 550 km

The tour was well run but I got a bit tired of Tajine, bread, and water for 3 days in a row. Take some snacks with you as the selection on the tour is limited. The driver drove safely but never said much. It would be nice to hear more about all the interesting places we visited. The highlight was the night in the desert and the camel ride. Be prepared to sleep in sandy beds with strangers in the same tent with no showers unless you have a group of 4-6 people. Book the deluxe package if you want a shower and more privacy. Try to avoid the summer months as the heat in June was almost unbearable though we had AC in the van. I can't imagine what July and August will be like! But overall a great experience to spend a night in the desert. Well worth the time and good value.

We visited Merzouga in January 2019. The trip is long, but we had a very good driver who drove safely and stopped for lunch, toilet etc. We heard from another group that they had a crazy driver so we were lucky! On our way we visited many interesting spots. The highlight was the tour to Aït Ben Haddou - the place where Gladiator, Indiana Jones and Game of thrones movies were shot. There was also a canyon on the way. Then we spent a night in a hotel. We had to share a room with two more girls and the room was freezing cold. I did not manage to sleep even though I had winter clothes on. Later when we spent a night in a tent in Sahara it was not as cold as in that hotel. Next evening finally Merzouga! The camel trip and the sky full of stars is fully worth the long trip. However it got again super cold in the night and morning and we did not manage to do the photoshoot in a dress. Later we learnt from locals that the best time to visit Merzouga is April-May. No toilet in the desert!

You will see interesting landscapes ans some very nice places! Camel ride is a bit painful (1hour to get to the camp) but you can also walk it and let the camel only carry your backback) Sleeping is quite basic, but okay (hot water in the Hotel and hearting/Aircondition provided) Be prepared, that it can get also very cold during the night and also in the (Atlas) mountains)! (so bring a jacket and so on) Better bring a small/middle sized backpack , not a suitcase/trolley (for the desert trip. or at least have an additional small backpack with you) A sleeping bag is not absolutely needed (but in the desert camp , it can be a help to feel more comftable because the blankets and so on are a bit shabby) It a long drive, but the Driver makes a stop every -2 hours, so it' s okay. OurDriver was driving save - but : it s a mountain road , it s a long ride, there are people on the road sometimes and there might happen accidents You will get some food/water alomost everywhere to buy.
