Full description
Learn fun facts about Macau as the last European colony of China, from its beginnings as a trading post to becoming a Portuguese territory in 1887 for hundreds of years. Marvel at the 450-year legacy that the Portuguese left in distinct East-meets-West culture and architecture. Hear about how Portuguese remains the official language, and little stories like why Macau is named Macau. Your guide will take you to the must-visit St. Paul Ruins, the only church in the world with Chinese, Japanese, and Western elements, and the largest church in Asia at the time of its erection. It was referred to as "The Vatican of the Far East" when it was built nearly 400 years ago by Catholic priests with design by Italian Jesuit Carlo Spinola.  Continue on to admire Macau’s UNESCO Historic Center; Senado Square is the living embodiment of East and West influences, with its famous wave-mosaic-tiled pavement and the unforgettable Portuguese-style colonial facades of the surrounding residences, old streets, and religious buildings. Afterwards, visit the Mount Fortress, the first residence of the Macau Governor and the historical Portuguese military center. Take a look at the Fortaleza which has 32 muzzle-loading cannons over 86,000 square feet. Take an optional tour to Taipa, a once-quiet fishing village that was known for its firework and handicrafts, and is now famous for fancy casinos. See the former home of the Portuguese Governor, now Taipa Houses Museums. Admire the 5 pretty pastel-colored houses that reveal the cultural heritage of the island. The last stop is the Guia Fortress, situated on the highest hill of Macau Peninsula and providing a unique panoramic view of the peninsula and the Historic Center. Adjacent to the fortress, you will find the oldest lighthouse on China's coast. It bears witness to one of the earliest and longest-lasting encounters between China and the West.
