From Punta Cana: Full-Day Island Tour with Lunch

8. From Punta Cana: Full-Day Island Tour with Lunch

This snapshot of Dominican life beyond the Coconut Coast has all the makings for a great day out. A sugarcane plantation, a cigar-rolling demonstration, and a blockbuster beach break are just some of the highlights. But the star turn of the day has got to be lunch in a local family's home. As Ramon, one of our local guides, says, ‘I'm always proud to show off my heritage through our food. Like the island itself, Dominican cuisine has been influenced by Taino, Spanish and African flavors. There's even a hint of the Middle East in some dishes. You'll see, smell and taste a whole new side to our country.' We kick off early, with a trip to Higuey to see the famous Altagracia Basilica – a pilgrimage site because of its miraculous image of Our Lady. Then, make sure to have your camera at the ready as we take a scenic drive through rustic villages, on our way to the next stop – a coconut oil producer. You'll also visit a sugarcane plantation for a rum-tasting session and watch a cigar-rolling demonstration with a master of his craft. After such a busy morning, you'll be ready for your lunch. Greeted by a Dominican family, you'll be welcomed into their home for a feast of typical dishes made with locally sourced produce. You'll also get to see the family's farm and coffee plantation, and taste freshly grown cocoa and fruit. We'll round the day of exploration with some time on Macao beach, where you can relax with a Cuba libre, swim, or enjoy some water sports.

I really enjoyed the experience! My tour guide Alex and Robin were so kind and answered all of my questions. They took us to many different sites. I recommend doing the longer tour as you get to eat a Dominican lunch which was delicious and visit the beach. We even got to try Dominican rum!!! It’s beautiful seeing the real DR countryside which is more authentic than just staying on the resort. They also pick you up and drop you back off at your hotel. If you want to enjoy life outside of the resort, book with these guys.

The buggies was extreme. I enjoyed this activity. We had got 3 tour guide and helped me. You need the change clothes after the buggie tour because your clothes will be muddy and your whole body too. But it was not problem for me. The transport pick up happened in time with an opened lorry. It was interesting to me who came from Europe because no sealt belt on the highway. But here it is normal and we enjoyed it too.

First of all the communication was super friendly and they rebooked us for a different day when we were sick the first date we agreed on. Amazing Cousinen service. the driving speed could be a bit faster and the stop at Macao beach could have been a bit longer, but overall the tour was a lot of fun and the value for money is really great. The shuttle there and back was also well organized.

We enjoyed the buggies ride , cave swimming and beach. Overall fun. Pros - Ride from the resort was quick, buggies route was fun, coffee-chocolate-mamjuana testing was ok, beach break was good Cons - long wait at the center for other people, things are overpriced and I will recommend not to buy anything there, cave swim time was 15 minutes which is too short to enjoy

A little bit on the shabby side but such a great day, we really enjoyed it, laughed so much and the people were so friendly… as well as the doggies : )
