Discover the tunnels and passages under Lviv that are more than 700 years old and over 100 kilometers long. Over the centuries, the walls of the underground labyrinths have seen kings, monks, lovers, knights, ordinary citizens, those hiding from war, and more. Tombs, gold coins, antique furniture, and weapons can still be found beneath the surface. They also say that ghosts haunt the dark crypts. DUNGEONS OF THE DOMINICAN MONASTERY It is believed that in the dungeons of the Dominican Monastery are the remains of a 13th-century prince. Discover the monk's cells and the torture hall as you find out what torture methods people used in the Middle Ages and how they sought out witches. DUNGEONS OF THE JESUIT MONKS The longest and most intricate Lviv dungeons are located under the St Peter and Paul Churches of the Jesuit Order. Some of them were once used as crypts as well. In the dungeons, you will see the archbishop’s sarcophagus. According to legend, the lid of the sarcophagus was once moved from the inside. DUNGEONS OF THE TRINITARIAN ORDER The dungeons fo the Trinitarian Order are located under the Transfiguration Church, which was built on the site of the 18th century Trinitarian church. Nowadays, they are the largest known underground area in Lviv. DUNGEONS OF THE OPERA HOUSE There are not only dungeons, but also an underground river under the famous Lviv Opera House. Since the late 19th century, the building has stood on the former riverbed of the Poltva River. Learn about the construction of the Opera House and see the river that still flows under the city.
