The Louvre in Paris is the world’s most visited museum. Its legendary collection boasts more than 35,000 paintings, sculptures and artifacts dating from prehistory to the modern day. The masterpieces are myriad, but these 5 are the crème de la crème.
Possibly the most famous painting in the world, Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” is synonymous with the Louvre. Her enigmatic smile and inescapable gaze draws millions to Paris every year.
Wonderfully maintained over two millennia, this statue of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, is one of the most iconic specimens of ancient Greek sculpture.
This 2.15-meter-high statue of a slave struggling against his fetters is one of Michelangelo’s greatest achievements and a sublime demonstration of sculpture’s dynamic potential.
Dating back to the days of the Pharaohs, this exquisite painted limestone sculpture is the most renowned piece in the Louvre’s exceptional collection of Egyptian antiquities.
Highly controversial upon its construction, the Louvre Pyramid is now one of Paris’ cultural treasures. The glass pyramid’s spectacular nighttime illumination is not to be missed.
The queues to the Louvre can be daunting. The main entrance, through the Louvre Pyramid, is always the most crowded. An insider tip is using the entrance located in the underground shopping center, Carrousel du Louvre, where you can buy your ticket and pass the security checks free of hassle. If you want to experience the Pyramid, you can always do so on your way out.
The museum is gigantic, so it’s essential to make sure you have enough time to see everything you want. The museum is open from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM on most days, and until 9:45 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays. Arrive early, grab one of the free maps at the ticket purchase area, and take some time to plan your visit – it’s worth it!
Together with a number of Paris’ museums, the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. Take this opportunity to visit other sights such as the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe and come back on another day!
We had an excellent tour of the Lourve highlights with our tour guide, Merve. Due to travel restrictions, we were the only ones on the tour and were lucky enough to spend very little time lining up to enter the museum or to view the Mona Lisa. Merve was an excellent guide, she was very knowledgeable not only about the history of the museum but also on the exhibits. She gave us quite alot of interesting information and also pointed out other interesting artefacts, paintings and sculptures that she thought we might enjoy.
Please don’t say “voucher needs to be exchanged” and then just leave it there without any instructions how to do that. I was thinking that GetYourGuide was fraud. Until I called someone from this business and they said they were going to change it themselves. Instead the page should mention that they are going to send you the real ticket a night before. All this ticket-voucher system is very confusing.
This highlights tour was great for our family because it provided each of us the opportunity to enjoy our preferred styles of art and to appreciate the history behind each piece. The tour guide Marvis, was fun, knowledgeable, and very nice. We really enjoyed our time at the Louvre.
Our guide Vic was great! She was very knowledgeable, great personality and made learning the different histories of Paris fun! We loved this tour because it was a different experience from the traditional sites. We walked a lot, but we were having so much fun we didn’t mind that.
Overall perfect experience. The guide was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. She took great care to make sure we had the best possible experience. Even showing us a few extra pieces after the tour had finished.
