Flavors of Lucca Food Tour with Local Guide

6. Flavors of Lucca Food Tour with Local Guide

You start your Lucca tour at the very spot that welcomes most visitors to the city: the Lucca train station. From there, you’ll head through the majestic city walls and reach the beautiful Cathedral Square, giving you your first taste of life in Lucca. But wait! To truly “taste” the city, you need to do just that and put your taste buds to work. Italians never start the day without their espresso fix, so you’ll do as the locals do and savor a cup of coffee. And because a good espresso goes best with a delicious treat, you’ll taste a traditional delicacy: Buccellato cake. You’ll be taken to a place where the secret recipe has been closely guarded since 1881. With caffeine and sugar fueling you, you’ll then head to the main shopping street of Lucca, admiring the medieval and Renaissance architecture and the signs of the old shops that testify to the city’s ancient artisan traditions: shoemakers, knife grinders, and silk merchants. But then, it’s time for more sweets as you enter the magical world of chocolate! Merchants and nobles were Lucca’s first lovers of chocolate and the tradition of chocolate-making has lasted for five centuries. You’ll taste the best selection in one of the most beautiful chocolate shops in town. Don’t worry, though, you’ll keep moving so you can walk off that chocolate stop. You’ll get to take in wonderful views from the top of the city as we wander along a part of the Renaissance walls. This pedestrian way is where locals regularly run, walk, and relax. This last stop on your Lucca tour will bring you to Roman times in the Piazza della Anfiteatro, or Amphitheatre Square, which is full of typical shops – and lunch! You’ll introduce you to some authentic food and wine, like maybe some Bazzone cured ham, Colonnata lardo, finocchiona salami, or Pecorino cheese produced in the Garfagnana mountains. To wash it all down, we’ll cheers with a glass of good local wine or artisan beer.

What people are saying about Lucca

I was traveling with my two adult sons and didn't just want to do sightseeing. I wasn't really sure what I was expecting. I got more for this than I thought! It was certainly not about being trained as a master chef, but rather getting to know the country and its people in a different way. After a small wine tasting, our guide Andrea and colleagues took us through the vineyards and knew a lot about viticulture. After we got hungry, we were instructed by Tamara to cook. If that didn't quite work out, she professionally saved the little mishaps, and in the end prepared us a super delicious meal. What touched me the most, however, was the lovable, nice and uncomplicated manner of the entire team. We felt like we were right in the middle of it. Thank you again for the unforgettable experience! In hindsight, it was one of the real highlights of our vacation.

Beautiful weather, rode e-bikes first around the walls of Lucca with a bit of history….then rode about 4 miles out to the hillside to a quaint family run winery. Nice winery tour, lovely sampling of 4-5 wines, bruschetta, prosciutto, cheese, honey, etc. Luca, our guide, was energetic and friendly. Had a fun day!

It was a beautiful performance! I’m not familiar with opera, but love music. The singers were very talented, and the pianist was excellent! Would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Lucca.

Had a great day with Massimo, met some nice people and drank very good wine! Worthwhile trip for sure.

I went to nights in a row – the experience is beyond fabulous.
