    2. From Avignon: 1-Day Lavender Tour

Your guide will first take you to Fontaine de Vaucluse, a beautiful village located by the river Sorgue. Walk up to its spring – one of the biggest in Europe. Next, stop at Sénanque Abbey and take as many pictures as you want of this majestic 12th century Abbey which is surrounded by lavender fields. After the photo-stop at the 'belvedere', head off to Gordes, a hilltop village made of local dry stones and enjoy the market (on Tuesdays). Explore the Provencal village of Roussillon, and observe the houses, whose colors vary with the sunlight. The Provencal market on Thursday adds even more colors. This is where you will take your lunch break (not included). After lunch, explore the lavender fields. Fill your body with fresh lavender fragrance, take some pictures and have a look at a distillation operation during harvest.  Your final stop is the village of Sault, in the middle of a buco...

This was a great overview of some very picturesque sites in Provence. It was nice to have some flexibility to spend time where we wanted, to shop, and to get some great information about the local areas.

Enjoy a hotel pick-up at around 08:30 (hotels located in downtown Avignon) and get ready for your 9-hour journey through Luberon.  First, stop at Fontaine de Vaucluse and admire this charming village by the river Sorgue. Walk up to its spring, one of the biggest of Europe and then walk down the cliff. Then, go to Sénanque Abbey and take beautiful pictures of this typical 12th-century abbey surrounded by lavender fields.  Your next step is Gordes. After the photo stop at the "belvedere", visit this famous hilltop village made of local dry stones, and explore the flourishing Provencal market on Tuesday. Then head off to the Provencal village of Roussillon, which weaves its spell throughout the year, as the shades of ochre of the houses and the ground vary with the sunlight. My partner and I had a brilliant 2-person private tour through the Luberon region this July (2017), setting off from Avignon. The best aspects of the tour can be summarised thus: -A friendly, knowledgeable, humorous and interesting guide who tackled questions on history and everyday life in the region -Not having to drive, especially through the narrow streets of the hill-top towns -Having the opportunity to select exactly what we wanted to do and for how long, and to be able to divert from the planned route whenever we wished -Avoiding the worst of the tourist crush by setting out early It's not the lowest cost way of seeing the region of course, but totally worth it.

  • From Marseille: Lavender Tour to Sault, Roussillon & Gordes

    4. From Marseille: Lavender Tour to Sault, Roussillon & Gordes

Drive to Pays de Sault with its wide lavender fields in bloom. Stop in Sault, the capital of lavender and enjoy many photo stops in the lavender fields in bloom and visit a lavender producer. You will have free time in the charming village of Sault for lunch on your own, and if you are visiting on a Wednesday, you're in luck as it is market day. In the the afternoon, discover two of the most beautiful villages in France. Roussillon is built at the top of an ochre cliff, and provides visitors with a beautiful understanding of the harmonious combination of man and nature, and of ochre and stone with all its ochre-washed façades. Gordes is a village erected on the top of a cliff, its fortified castle and church dominate the typical houses of the village which were built with stones from the rock on which they sit. Head back to Marseille in the late afternoon.

Great tour to see the lavender fields. Make sure you are prepared to walk and deal with the heat if you go in the summer.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to have a full experience of Provence. The tour has an impressive itinerary from Gordes, Roussilion and Sault where you can visit quaint villages and the lavender field. Gilles was so organized and knowledgeable about each location. He truly is passionate about making us feel welcomed and having great experience. After this tour, I am excited to come back to Avignon and set up another tour with him next year.
