The Škocjan Caves are a unique natural phenomenon, created by the Reka River. The Reka River springs below the Snežnik plateau and flows for 55 kilometers (34 miles) on the surface. After reaching the karst — that is, the limestone surface — the river not only deepens its riverbed through erosion but also corrosion; it dissolves the limestone and creates the caves. Explore the Škocjan Caves with a local, English-speaking guide on this half-day trip from Ljubljana. Get picked up at your hotel or guesthouse at 8:30 AM, then drive to the caves as your guide informs you about Slovenia. On the way to lunch we have an option to stop at Lake Cerknica, one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. We return through the Ljubljana Marshes, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, as a unique landscape at the doorstep of Ljubljana.
