Full description
Discover the monuments of Alfama, one of the oldest and most atmospheric districts of Lisbon, and the only part of the city to survive the Great Earthquake of 1755. The neighborhood is a silent witness to the past glories and tragedy of Portugal, from the fall of empires to the birth of the new nation. Wander the narrow streets and ornate squares that echoed to the sounds of Phoenician traders, calls to prayer, and the rattle of historic trams. Here you will find the heart of fado music, a sound of longing and loss that gives voice to the languages, cultures, and religions that have all contributed to the district’s rich sense of community. Walk down Moorish streets and see some of the Roman foundations of Lisbon. Follow the silvery banks of the River Tagus, and marvel at the sun-bleached sandstone walls of the Castle of St George. Make your ascent to the city summit gently to let your breath be taken away by the amazing views.

Lisbon is a city that seems to go uphill in both directions. Fortunately our guide was very patient while we followed him to the top of the district. The view was certainly worth it as was the wealth of information about the history of Portugal and the architecture. At one point Portugal was a world leader and controlled all sea trade to the Far West and Africa. Putting the history in context as we toured the oldest undamaged district in Lisbon was very enlightening.

Rita made this tour fun!

Very interesting and worthwhile tour of the Alfama district. Great to get insights from a local. Rita was great: friendly, engaging, funny, and enthusiastic, with good suggestions of restaurants and fado bars to visit. The whole group was congenial - very international. I really enjoyed this tour and wish I had time to do others! Learned a lot...

an entertaining and

Fred is a passionate, funny and educated guide! He focused the tour on local history (-ies) and people of Alfama and thanks to him we got to know locals and started conversations about the life of the quarter. We learned about the living as well as the past cultural life of Alfama, celebrations and habits. Have a try!
