Meet your guide at the Lion's Head Hike - Starting Point. There is parking along Signal Hill Road if you arriving by car. Embark on the route to the summit, climbing 400 meters along the steep and rocky path. Keeping a slow and steady pace, take time to enjoy the views and photo opportunities en route. Enjoy views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean at the summit with snacks and coffee provided before heading back down the mountain to the meeting point.

2. Cape Town: Lion's Head Sunset Hike

Your Lion's Head trail experience begins on a gravel track through spectacular groves of silver leaf trees. You will start off by following a path which reveals ever-changing views as it spirals around Lion's Head. Very soon the breathtaking vista of the Atlantic coastline and the magnificent apostles of Table Mountain will come into view. Soon the gravel track narrows to a path, from where you will pass the first paragliding launch pad. You will then continue along the stepped path with views over the very popular Camps Bay Beach and Clifton beaches. Following a further 30 minutes of hiking, you will come to a split keep on the upward-tending path. From here you will continue with views of Seapoint on your left, and following a further 10 minutes you will see the city of Cape Town sprawled beneath you and the front of Table Mountain rearing up high above. You will then continue steeply upwards to the first ladder, before traversing left along a shelf with a chain handrail. Next, you will continue with the path until you reach a fork, where you will have the choice to either veer left to circumnavigate two rock pitches, or to turn right and climb the rock pitches. If you are not into vertical rock steps simply continue left, from where you can carry on with the path past some huge stone pine trees to gain the crest of the southeast ridge. From here you will follow the obvious well-worn path via some scrambling and a ladder to the 669-meter summit.

Embark on a trail run around Lion's Head and Signal Hill and experience the beautiful Cape Flora. Much of this rich, natural heritage cannot be seen anywhere else on earth. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature as you take to the trails. Take in fascinating sunrise views over the Hottentots Holland mountain as well as Table Mountain. Begin your approximately 10-kilometer run at the base of Lion's Head climbing gradually along the spine of the mountain all the way to the first stop at Signal Hill viewpoint. From here, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline, Robben Island, and the magnificent twelve apostles mountain range. From Signal Hill the route goes around the East side of the mountain with a gentle downslope before crossing over to the west side of Lion's Head. The path winds around the base of the mountain offering panoramic views and overlooking some of the most expensive area of Cape Town city bowl as well as its beaches.

Of all the hikes in Cape Town, the climb up Lion’s Head is definitely the most popular. Situated between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, the peak provides 360-degree views of the city, Table Bay and the Atlantic seacoast. Taking in the sunset and the city lights from on high is a totally new way of enjoying Cape Town. You’ll make your way up to the peak on a spiral path. The ascent takes around an hour and there are gorgeous views all the way. Your passionate and knowledgeable guide will point out iconic landmarks and tell you about the history of the city. You will learn about the geology, fauna and flora of this world heritage site.  There are a number of ladders and chains that help you to the summit. If you are afraid of heights this may be daunting but if you are up for the challenge then your guide will help you all the way. At the summit you’ll be able to look down on Table Mountain and the city of Cape Town and enjoy the light and fantastic photographic opportunity. Walk back down as the sun sets and take in views of Table Mountain illuminated by a golden sky. If you’re lucky the moon might rise from the eastern mountains, further enhancing your views.

Gaze in awe at the breathtaking landscape, and identify icons such as the adjacent Table Mountain and Robben Island out at sea. Look down on glorious beaches, including Camps Bay and Sea Point.  Avail of 2 different hiking paths to reach the summit, determined by your guide based on your level of fitness. Brave the adventurous path using staples and chains, or choose an easier route to avoid them! Whichever path you and your party feel most comfortable with, breathtaking panoramas are guaranteed. Rest at the top and watch the spectacular sunrise over Cape Town with a cup of hot coffee and some home-baked muffins.

Hike for another 30 minutes and reach a split. Continue with views of Seapoint to your left, and after 10 minutes, be rewarded with a wonderful viewpoint. See the city of Cape Town sprawled beneath you and the front of the Table Mountain rearing up high above. Then, move upwards to the first ladder, before traversing left along a shelf with a chain handrail. Continue on the path until you reach a fork. Choose where to go from here. Veer left to circumnavigate 2 rock pitches or turn right and climb the rock pitches. If you are not into vertical rock steps, simply continue left and carry on the path past huge stone pine trees to gain the crest of the southeast ridge. Follow the trail and a ladder to the 669-meter summit.

This is a wonderful hike for families, as well as for couples, as the sunset is incredibly romantic from the top of Lions Head. View the Cape from 670 meters with panoramic views of the city, Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the beaches below including Camps Bay and Sea Point.  There are two paths that can be taken to the summit: the adventurous path using the staples and chains, or the easier route that avoids them. This hike is very popular all year round especially when the moon is full. Hike down almost with no extra torchlight, the moon can be so bright. If the moon isn't full when you tour, grab a head torch and wind breaker and head off. You are able to do a sunrise hike to the top, a day hike or even a sunset hike, according to your preference.

From Hout Bay you will ascend the last easy climb to Chapman's Peak where you'll stop at the lookout point, the perfect opportunity to take pictures of the breathtaking panoramic views. On your way back you will stop in Hout Bay on the beach for cake and a refreshing drink before hitting the road back to Cape Town.
