This hike starts in an exotic forest, offering spectacular views of São Jorge in Santana, all the way through the Levada do Rei. From halfway, the levada that runs the slope from the interior of the island traverses an area of well-developed natural forest rich in natural biodiversity. The levada covered with lush vegetation and the wide variety of species, as well as the presence of the beautiful levada, are good examples of the island's natural, built and cultural heritage. Arriving at Ribeiro Bonito, where you stop to enjoy a unique place in the middle of the Laurissilva forest, listening to the birds singing and the water running in the stream. At the end of the walk, stop at a typical place on the island of Madeira.
Following a convenient pickup from your accommodation or at Madeira Airport, depart on your private tour to Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, via the Levada do Rei for one of the most beautiful hiking trails of Madeira. Starting at São Jorge, a peaceful village located in the north of the island with spectacular views over the mountains and sea, the first part of the trail consists of a mixture of endemic and introduced vegetation after the discovery of the island. You’ll also get various perspectives on the villages in the distance as you walk along the man-made channels created to carry water for irrigation of agricultural fields around the island. In the second part, the trail penetrates into the interior of the island that stills remains the same since before its discovery more than five centuries ago. On this path you’ll find the natural flora and fauna of Madeira ...
This tour takes place in São Jorge, on the Northern side of Madeira Island. This adventure is an 11 km easy hike, along a flat trail that penetrates the pristine Laurissilva Forest, and its unique vegetation which is a UNESCO heritage listed location. The first part of the trail consists of a mixture of endemic and introduced vegetation during the colonisation of the island. At certain parts of the walk it is possible to see views of São Jorge and Santana villages at a distance. In the second part, the trail penetrates the deepness of the valleys, and the natural endemic flora and fauna of Madeira, surrounding the trail. After 5.5 km of hiking, take a break at Ribeiro Bonito, a river stream that cuts through the pristine Laurissilva forest, before heading back to the starting point.
Awesome! Jorge is a fantastic guide! Was a beautiful walk and we enjoyed every minute of it. He knew a lot about the plants and animals there and we really enjoyed talking with him. My boyfriend and I loved it and would book another trip with him for sure. It's a long walk but not difficult or anything but bring good hiking shoes or sneakers that could get muddy. Great hike!

Really nice trip - but took most of the day due to long transport / pickup of group participants to and from the tour. The Levada is described as moderate, but is "light"
Very nice, leisurely hike in a wonderful landscape. We were lucky enough to be only two with our guide, so to speak 5 star service.
