1. Private Walking Tour Leeuwarden

Your afternoon in Leeuwarden begins at your hotel, or if you travel to Leeuwarden from elsewhere, at the train station. Set off in a relaxing pace to make sure you really get to see, feel and learn all about this town.  Already before the year 1000 there were people living in Leeuwarden. Around 1600 the city belonged to the ten most important cities in the Netherlands. Fun facts: Leeuwarden is chosen as European Capital of Culture in 2018 and Capital of Taste for 2015! Leeuwarden is the capital of the Province Friesland. It is known as the start and finish of the Elfstedentocht, a Dutch ice skating race that goes through eleven cities. This race does not takes place often, only when the ice is thick enough to skate on. Leeuwarden is a mixture of shopping areas, cultural highlights and an exciting nightlife. It has over 600 historical monuments. This private walking tour will take you through the historic centre of Leeuwarden with a short visit to the leaning tower Oldehove. Let your personal guide take you to best places in town!

Our guide was terrific! He showed us places we would have just walked right past on our own, not knowing the history or culture. Leeuwarden is a much bigger city than we are used to, but our guide showed us places based on our interests. He asked us at the beginning of our tour what we were interested in and made sure to include and point out what we wanted to know. We stopped for coffee and he shared with us maps, stories of ancient kings, and art in the building we were in. I remain impressed with his knowledge of the city's history and place in Dutch history. After our tour, we visited some of the sites and restaurants he introduced us to on the tour.

Never knew Leeuwarden had such a rich history! Jelle Nauta was our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide from Leeuwarden. He took us up the Oldehove tower, past beautiful buildings from the golden age and shared the stories dating back to the roots of Dutch Royalty. His calm demeanor and passion for Frysian culture was a pleasure. One note for the agency: ensure the right pricing and direct connection with GetYourGuide (rather than through another agency) because a private walking tour of 2 hours should not cost €250. It should be affordable for more people to enjoy.
