Full description
Skip the lines and discover the wonders of the salt city on a 2.5-hour visit. The tour starts with a descent down the stairs to a depth of 64 meters! The micro-climate of the mine, by the way, has a beneficial impact on visitors who suffer from asthma and allergies. You’ll be led through a number of chambers and see underground lakes, shrines and salt monuments. The underground labyrinth covers 9 levels at 64 to 327 meters below the surface of the earth. Nearly 2,400 chambers are connected with sidewalks, for a total length of 245km. The mine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978. The first tourist trail in Wieliczka was established at the turn of the 19th century. The trail leads through numerous drifts and galleries where evidence of mining activity has been preserved. You’ll also see examples of sacred art and themed compositions relating to the history of the mine and legends surrounding it. Wieliczka is also home to the world's largest mining heritage museum, with a collection of unique pieces of mining equipment reflecting the development of mining techniques from the Middle Ages until today. The tour ends at a level that’s 135 meters below the surface, and you’ll return to the surface by elevator.

We were picked up at the designated place and whisked away on the 25 minute journey in a lovely clean car. The mines themselves are like nothing I've ever encountered or even imagined! The tour guide was full of insights about the rooms as well as life down in the mines. There is ALOT of stairs (all going down) and you cover alot of distance so comfortable shoes are a must! At the end our driver met us and took us back to where we were picked up.

Be aware that at the start of the tour, there are a lot of wooden stairs to descend. I felt a bit panicked at first but it was fine, people took their time. As you go down, there are numbers on the wall. The bottom of the stairs is number 54, each flight was 6 steps. There is a lift at the end of the tour to bring you back up. And there's a restaurant in the mine to rest and have something to eat. It's worth the effort.

Expect lots of walking, but nothing unbearable (had elderly and kids in my group and they were perfectly fine). Most of us took out our coats and jackets during the tour as it gets warm - 2 to 3 layers would be perfect. Tour guide was humorous yet informative; pace was perfect as well. Highly recommended!
