Guided Canoe Tour of the Curonian Spit Lithuania

2. Guided Canoe Tour of the Curonian Spit Lithuania

A unique combination of wind, water and sand has been shaping this narrow strip of land since the beginning of time. Today it is known as the Curonian Spit and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. There is plenty to see here: the migrating dunes, the wildlife, the old fishermen villages and,  last but not the least, the Pervalka Lighthouse. The combination of the spectacular nature, cultural and historical heritage and a truly unforgettable cedar canoe paddling experience makes this tour one of a kind. You will begin with a picturesque ferry transfer to the Curonian Spit. You will travel from Klaipeda to the village of Pervalka, passing Juodkrante with its peaceful embankments. After a short briefing, you will proceed to Pervalka Lighthouse. You will paddle along the shore, enjoying picturesque views of the dunes, the Curonian Lagoon and of course, the main landmark of this trip, the Pervalka Lighthouse. After a short photo opportunity at the lighthouse (no need to risk your own equipment, your guide will take pictures with his camera and a drone) you will paddle towards the dunes. Here you will sit back, have a glass of wine, a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the view. On your way back you will make two stops, first, at the famous heron and cormorant colony, one of the largest colonies of these birds in Europe, second, in Juodkrante village (formerly known as Schwarzort).

During this day tour you will be able to explore the most interesting sites located in the surrounds of Vilnius. After pick-up from your hotel, the tour will start at Paneriai memorial park, where thousands of Jews from Wilna were killed. The Paneriai or Ponary massacre was a mass murder of up to 100,000 people by German SD, SS and Lithuanian Nazi collaborators, during World War II. The murders took place between July 1941 and August 1944 near the railway station of Ponary, now known as Paneriai, a suburb of what is today Vilnius, Lithuania. Abolute lovely days

Already 5 Minutes after booking and the official booking confirmation I received another email from Janis (the tour guide) directly Asking me, where it should be best to meet, or to pick me wherever I am. As it is still pre-season I was lucky to be the only guest, having just a completely private tour. Janis picked me up exactly on time in the morning. We have been out on the lake until afternoon. It was sich a great day, that I can hardly put it into word. Janis and I shared one canoe. A beautiful one, which he builds himself during winter times. In summer he offers tours with it. We had a lot of chatting during the paddling. Janis speaks absolute fluently English. But we also shared quiet moments, simply enjoying the beautiful nature around us. After a great picknick for lunch on one of the small islands in the lake we kept on paddling. Janis then let a drone fly above us and taking great pictures from above. It was a wonderful landscape and Uwe was really great, told us everything in detail. I noticed that he puts his heart and soul into the tours, that's unique. We were a bit irritated at the beginning of the tour because 2 people we didn't know came along. There was no mention of this when we booked, which was a bit strange, but we were lucky, they were pleasant people. Just wanted to mention this.

Our guide, Milde, arrived punctually to pick us up for the tour and gave us an enlightening commentary about the Curonian Spit, its geography and its history. He also provided insights on the lifestyle of the locals peppered with his own experiences. Moreover, he showed us hidden gems e.g. a cafe set in the pine forest away from the maddening crowds of tourists.

Outstanding, informative, impressive

Our guide Uwe picked us up right from our apartment by car on time. We drove across the Curonian Spit by car and got a lot of geographical, historical and personal impressions of the island. In between we also made a few stops and were able to spend time alone in the dunes. A perfect day that we can only recommend, as Uwe responded very well to us :)
