We enter the Old City on foot through one of the massive gates in the 16th-century walls and pass the Western Wall excavations as we walk towards the Western Wall. In the Jewish Quarter, we see the Byzantine Cardo lined with columns, then we walk along a section of the Via Dolorosa, as Jesus did bearing his cross. The Via Dolorosa culminates at the Holy Sepulcher Church which was built in the 4th century to encompass Christ’s tomb and the site of the crucifixion at Golgotha (Calvary). The tour stops for a lunch break in the Old City and you have time to meander through one of the traditional markets. Leaving the Old City we can see Mount Zion as we drive towards the town where Christ was born. In Bethlehem, we tour the Nativity Church and see the Holy Grotto where the nativity took place. The tour ends with a drive back to Ashdod port where you can rejoin your cruise ship and continue to your next port of call.

This 2,000 year old wall was part of the outer supporting walls of the holy Second Temple which was destroyed in AD70. Continue on to the Via Dolorosa or the Way of Sorrows. Along the way you will pause at several Stations of the Cross and finally you will reach the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The basilica is constructed on the site where Jesus is believed to have been crucified and within the church is his burial tomb. The Byzantine church has been renovated, rebuilt, and expanded over the years; today it is a vast and ornate place of worship. To end your tour, take a walk through the busy markets of the Old City where you can buy unique souvenirs from the City of Gold.

Entering the Old City via the Zion Gate, pass through the Armenian Quarter on route to the Jewish Quarter and the 1500-year-old Byzantine Cardo. The excavated Crusader shops are now modern stores. Stop at the Kotel, the Western Wall where Jews have prayed since the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE.  The Via Dolorosa, also known as the Way of the Cross, is the route many pilgrims follow on their way to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the church built on the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and his burial tomb. Although the Byzantine church was partially destroyed during the Persian and Muslim conquests, the rebuilt and redesigned Crusader Church preserved much of the earlier church. Exit the Old City via the market and the Jaffa Gate for a short tour of the new city. A visit to Yad VaShem, the Holocaust Museum, reveals artifacts and photographs documenting the discrimination, persecution, and, finally, the annihilation of Jewish communities across Europe. It also honors the righteous among the nations who risked their lives while trying to save Jews.
