Full description
Explore the rich culture and history of Kathmandu, Nepal's capital on a sightseeing day tour of its world heritage sites - many of which are UNESCO-listed. Start the tour at Kathmandu Durbar Square, a complex of palaces, courtyards and temples, built between the 12th and 18th centuries. Learn about how this area used to be the seat of the ancient Malla kings of Kathmandu. Also, explore the 3 museums located inside the palace building. Next, head over to the Swoyambhunath Stupa or Monkey Temple. Take in the views over the valley from the top of the hill on the western side and see the many monkeys which inhabit the grounds. Continue on to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world which lies 5 km east of the city center. Admire the richly-ornamented pagodas showing the sacred Linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. After this, visit Boudhanath, a 2500-year-old Buddhist stupa in the Valley built in the 5th century. Watch the Buddhist pilgrims from Tibet going round the stupa spinning the prayer wheels. Finally, explore the popular local market called Ason. As you stroll through the stalls, see how the area is inhabited mainly by Newar indigenous peoples of Kathmandu. Meanwhile, people from all over the nation and even foreigners are regular customers and visitors there.
