Whether it's a longing for a deeper sense of Rome's past, a chance to explore the underground tunnels of the city, or just morbid curiosity, exploring these subterranean burial sites is a must do, so here are our top five sites to see.
Christian martyrs Marcellinus and Peter are buried here, which is where the tomb receives its name. With a wonderful history and impressive art work, it's a perfect stop to make.
This is the most popular of all the catacombs, where you'll find the burial sites of many martyrs and 16 popes, not to mention early Christian frescoes.
The only catacombs still to contain bones, these are also some of the oldest, largest and most impressive. Included here, as well, is a 2nd century fresco of the last supper.
Featuring incredible architecture and with a fantastic history, it is well worth taking a tour to this catacomb.
The greatest draw to this catacomb is one of the earliest images of the bearded Christ. This tomb also originally held the relics of Saints Felix and Adauctus.
Some of the catacombs are closed on certain days of the week, so be sure to check in advance that the site you wish to visit is open!
A great many of the most important catacombes are located on the Via Appia, and it's very easy to access by foot or the hop on, hop off Archeobus service.
I did the tour with my son (10 years) on a Sunday morning and we had a perfect last day in Rome. Our guide was very friendly and professionnal regarding the anecdotes of the history of the Via Appia. Some small parts are a bit more tricky to ride because of the car traffic. Overall I recommand the tour to everyone who can ride a bike.
This tour is nice, as you get to see special places in Rome, that you would otherwise not visit. The tour guide had a lot of good history and background stories to better understand the catacombs and what they represent. The added value was in those stories, which you would otherwise not figure out when visiting by yourself.
This is one of the most interesting tours imaginable. I usually like to do and see things unguided but I learnt and saw so much more by going on this tour. I would never have found some of the places we saw. This was the second time I went in this tour and I have recommended it to others who also loved it.
I was the only one booked and was worried that it would be cancelled, thankfully I was wrong. Slobodan was so friendly and knowledgeable and really made this tour. It was beyond beautiful and one of the most awe inspiring things I did on my trip.
Very interesting , the guides were very good , informative ( on both parts ). First part , in my opinion , is the must when you are in Rome , the second - gives another point of view on places you visit during a day . I highly recomand this tour.
