This ranks as one of the most incredible sites we have ever seen! Our guide and driver were great. The guide had the perfect amount of information to share-not too much, not too little. We had plenty of time at each of the monasteries and nunneries. Tips for travel: The train ride is LONG. 4 hours there and 4 hours back. There are great bathrooms on the train. The monasteries and nunneries only have bathrooms with holes in the floor. This is difficult for women, so be prepared. Women MUST wear skirts. I just packed a skirt in my bag to put on over my pants at each required location. Pack snacks for the trip because there is no food on the train. You do get to stop for lunch in the town of Kalambaka right when you arrive. There was a little time at the end of the trip to grab a light dinner or a coffee before boarding the train, but this is not guaranteed and you don't want to miss that train back.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We visited 3 monasteries and learnt so much about the history. The views are breathtaking. I suffered from motion sickness and did take a tablet but the bus goes slowly and stops regularly so was not affected. There are many steps but you can take your time and it is so worth it. I would recommend to the ladies to bring a long light skirt or a large scarf to tie around their waist. Most monasteries provide them for free but one was charging 3 euro to buy one. We went on a rainy day but it was still magical. It does take 4h by train from central Athens but you will not regret it. We went with our 11 yo daughter who also absolutely loved it.

Trip was well worth it! Our guide Maria made the experience so enjoyable, with tons of facts and personal anecdotes about the area. Highly recommend to anyone considering, it was one of the best places I’ve ever been!!

It was a rainy day, which added to the atmospherics. An amazing place to visit

Really enjoyed our tour guide Maria, she was fantastic!!
