Girona: Private History Tour

1. Girona: Private History Tour

The ancient walled city of Girona stands on a fortress-like hill, high above the confluence of the Onyar and Ter rivers. With the help of a local guide, discover the most important monuments of Girona, its history, its Jewish heritage and also its legends. This private tour can be tailored to your specific needs and interests. Founded by Iberians, the Romans later named the city Gerunda and established it as an important stopping point on the Via Augusta, linking Iberia with Rome. The most important time for the city, however, was the middle ages. Due to its location near the French border, the city was under siege several times and much of its buildings were built during this time.  Explore the city's 15th-century cathedral, boasting the widest unsupported gothic arch in the world which dominates the skyline. In the lower part of the city, enjoy the steep alleyways and the brightly painted façades of the houses overlooking the Onyar river which provide the most emblematic image of the city. Among the bridges that span the river are the lightweight Gómez bridge and the Ferreries Velles bridge which was designed by Gustave Eiffel in 1877. For those interested in The Game of Thrones series, the guide can show the locations where the 6th season was filmed.

Explore exhibits of valuable objects from the cathedral treasury at the Girona Cathedral, built between the 12th and 18th centuries. See the Gerona Beatus manuscript (10th century) and the famous Tapestry of the Creation (11th century). Visit the Church of St. Felix next, a longstanding symbol of Catalan Gothic architecture. Outstanding experience! For those who visit Girona in just over half a day (as in my case) The fact of having to validate the pass at the Md'A implies a good planning of the movements between one site and another among those included in the pass but also with the other sites that can be visited in the city due to their different opening and closing times. It would not be bad if each site published an average visit time in the FAQ (almost all sites in Barcelona did!) In order to facilitate this scheduling. The problem does not arise for those who decide to stay at least one night, thus dedicating at least a whole day to visits.

Girona is an extraordinary city, with a gigantic historical past and sumptuous architectural monuments. A great change of scenery close to the Spanish border. Student town with a beautifully paved fortified town centre, small alleys and nuggets to discover at every street corner. Lovers of the Arts, I oblige you!!! Alliance of Water and Stone, you feel good instantly!! There is too much to see and experience, three wonderful days!!

What a truly magical experience!! The Art Museum was a very educational visit for both myself and my 12yr old daughter, the ability to explore the history and the ever changing landscape of Art. Both the Cathedral and St Felix church are breathtaking, serene and so peaceful. Thoroughly recommend making them a part of your visit to Girona.

Very nice, informative and entertaining tour. We liked it very much.
