Top sights in St. Petersburg
The Hermitage is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. Its collection is an unparalleled showcase of Russian culture and history as well as the country’s commitment to global art collecting. Don’t get lost figuring out what to see!
This room is one of the few in original 18th-century style. The Duchess of Sutherland wrote, “I have never in my life seen so brilliant a sight,” and, frankly, neither have we.
The Hermitage’s claim to fame is the greatest global collection of Scythian gold. You’ll barely be able to pay attention to the guide when you see these Ancient Greek treasures.
Who knew that Faberge made more than Easter eggs? Find an extensive collection as well as precious historic gems that were gifts to the Russian court.
Discover the history of Russia’s militia housed in the stunning neoclassical General Staffing Building.
The Hermitage’s collection of Eastern ancient and modern art is impressive, but its Western collection really shines—see works by Renoir, Monet, Van Gough, Degas and Picasso.
Both the Gold Room and the Diamond Room are only available with a tour. Purchasing tickets when you buy your day pass at the entrance in the Winter Palace is an option—if any tickets are still available. Unlike the entrance tickets, these ones aren’t sold online. Arrive first thing in the morning or call a number listed on the website as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, you cannot exit and reenter the building. With so much to see, plan for a meal before arriving and light fare or a pastry at the Hermitage café.

What people are saying about Hermitage Museum
The activity was exactly as decribe, our guide was exceptionnal and the price was good for two days. We were on a cruise, no problem to meet our guide after the customs. We were only two and still the tour was not cancel. We strongly recommand, our tour was in french with Masha (Maria). Thank you to Masha, you made our visit in Saint-Petersburg memorable.
Our guide Tim was wonderful. He navigated the building with much grace and poise. He was courteous and assisted other people that were not even part of our tour. His commentary on the history, art and architecture was very informative. He told little jokes along the way. We all had an ear phone and audio box to hear everything very clearly. We skipped the line at the beginning and could not believe how many people were already waiting. For your first time going to the Hermitage make sure you pay the extra for this tour.
The Ermitage is fantastic, but if you plan to visit it in one day you definitely need a guide to touch essential things and not to get lost in the immense building. Our guide has managed to provide us an excellent tour, always interesting and involving, using a fluent italian, with a rich vocabulary. She's been also a very nice person, answering all our questions. We definitely recommend the Adventure Travel and its guides. Last, but not the least, 'skip the line' is a very true advertisement. There was a huge line, even for guided groups, but our guide managed to make us slip through in a minute (maybe since we were only four people).
Katia was a great guide with lots of information and culture. The 3 hours we spent with her went by in a flash. Loved it and recommend it
Good explanation of Hermitage building and of the highlights of the paintings. Super tour!
