  • Hells Gate Mud Bath and Sulphur Spa Experience

    1. Hells Gate Mud Bath and Sulphur Spa Experience

Enjoy a therapeutic mud bath and sulfur spa at Hells Gate Geothermal Reserve, located just a 15-minute drive from central Rotorua. A round-trip shuttle service option from Rotorua is also available. Soak in the thermal mud and acidic, sulfurous waters as the local Maori have done for over 800 years. Apply the natural geothermal mud to your skin while relaxing in the warm sulfurous waters for 20 minutes. Follow the mud spa with a cool shower before relaxing in the hot sulfur mineral spa. The warm geothermal mud opens and cleans the skin’s pores, and the sulfur spa provides a gentle exfoliation and deep cleansing.

We had a great time, very relaxing. Don’t wear your own clothes, hire them or you’ll be sorry :)

    3. Rotorua: Hell's Gate Geothermal Walk

Discover the Hells Gate/Tikitere Geothermal Reserve, one of the most active in New Zealand.  Enjoy a self-guided walk of the spectacular reserve, located approximately 15-minutes drive from central Rotorua. See boiling hot pools and erupting waters with temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Celsius. Discover steaming fumaroles, hot water lakes, sulphur crystals and deposits. Learn about Hells Gate’s extensive history independently or join an interactive guided tour, available daily at 10:30 AM or 2:30 PM. A complimentary shuttle service picks up from central Rotorua three to four times a day (seasonally) with scheduled drop offs.

Fantastic and educational experience. Recommended to follow the guided tour as the guides tend to give more information and even some personal stories, which makes it more interesting compared to just reading the signs. However, it would be better if the guide could wait for everyone to assemble before telling us the information.

I’m from Australia and we don’t have anything like this there. So it was new to me. But I really enjoyed it! New Zealand is amazing. Wish you could spend more time in the mud baths, you’re only allocated 20 mins in those. But the spa (if you paid for it) you can spend as long as you want. We also turned up at the right time and was able to get a guided tour through Hells gate, which I’d recommend. Rather than just walking around aimlessly. There’s signs around to explain things but our guide was super knowledgeable and showed us some pretty cool stuff we wouldn’t otherwise have known. Very cool experience!

This was a great half day thing to do in Rotorua. The walk around the geothermal area was very interesting and I loved the chance to do the mud bath and sulphur pools!

Great experience, so many activities to do - worth the price. Please note although they say duration is 3 hours, you are able to spend as long as you want.

I would definitely go on a guided-tour. We learned SO much from our awesome guide. She was great about taking pictures for us, too!

Amazing experience, my first time and hopefully not my last!
