From Tromso: Whale Watching in Magic Skjervoy

1. From Tromso: Whale Watching in Magic Skjervoy

Watch magnificent humpback whales and orcas feed on shoals of herring when they migrate to Skjervoy between November and January. Enjoy a scenic panoramic drive from Tromso to Skjervoy, then hop into a rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meet at the Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromso bright and early. From here, drive for 3.5 hours to Skjervoy to meet your guide. Once in Skjervoy, receive a warm flotation suit before getting into the RIB. Then, set off on a 2.5-hour whale watching excursion in the Kvaenangen Fjord. Marvel at the natural scenery and keep your eyes peeled for orcas and humpback whales, as well as other local wildlife. After your excursion, refresh with some sandwiches, tea, and coffee before driving back to Tromso.

While it is super expensive and rather long travel - it is so worth it. We got close to the whales enough to make eye contact with one. The lady that led our boat - was super and very intuitive about where the whales would surface and almost always correct! she was also direct, informative and very straightforward (typical for north Europe but may come across rather rude for those not used to it). I recommend the tour if you are willing to rough it a bit to come super close.

It was an amazing experience, we saw Orcas and Humpbacks as soon as we set off! We got close and watched them feeding. A very long trip with 4 hours each way on the coach, so bring some snacks, drinks and something to read. Also a change of clothes as you may get wet! If you are using your phone to take photos, I’d recommend a clear pouch with a lanyard to keep it safe and dry. Overall a really brilliant day and will never forget it.

The most magical experience! Really recommend it! You are so close to the whales, and yet at the same time everything is done with so much respect for the animals!

Unique experience, we saw many orcas and many whales. Without it, even the landscapes of the fjords are breathtaking. We quickly forget the cold.

Worth the extra money to be on the rib, much closer to water/whales. Excellent all round
