From Jerusalem: Caesarea and Western Galilee Day Trip

1. From Jerusalem: Caesarea and Western Galilee Day Trip

Spend a full day exploring the ancient cities and surviving architecture of Israel with a tour guide who will make history come alive before your eyes. After pickup from your hotel in Jerusalem, travel up the Mediterranean coast to the first point of interest, the old city of Caesarea. Among its archaeological excavations you’ll see gateways, a moat, and well-preserved walls and rooms. Visit the perfectly-preserved Roman amphitheater, which is still used today for performances by Israeli and international artists. Next to this, you’ll find the remains of the Hippodrome and Roman Temple, which overlook the port with its busy commercial ships. Hear stories about how after the Crusade this once prosperous city sank into oblivion.   Continue driving north to pass through Haifa, where you’ll stop to see the breathtaking Baha’i Shrine and gardens. Its 19 terraced gardens burst with colorful flowers and landscaped designs. Next stop is Rosh Hanikra, the northern-most point along Israel’s Mediterranean coast. Descend by cable car into the network of limestone grottoes created by the constant bombardment of waves against the rocks.   On the return journey, you’ll stop at Acre (Akko), the largest Crusader city in the country. See how well-preserved the city is and the incredible surviving architecture. The city is still alive, full of markets and bustling with people who still live in the ancient buildings. Learn about how the city’s mighty walls prevented even Napoleon from conquering the city. Finally, visit the Crusader remains, the prison used under Turkish rule, and the gallows used under British mandate to hang Jews who broke British law limiting Jewish immigration to Palestine following WWII.
