Berlin: Kreuzberg Guided Walking Evening Tour

2. Berlin: Kreuzberg Guided Walking Evening Tour

Begin at the Kotti, which is a central place in Kreuzberg. In a short introduction, your guide will give you an overview of Kreuzberg’s history, life, and culture.  Kreuzberg was founded as a typical working-class neighborhood in the middle of the 19th century. People lived in huge building complexes, some in the fifth or sixth backyard. Discover these places at Oranienstraße and try to imagine life back in the days when it was almost impossible to breathe fresh air and when many people could not rent a whole flat or a room but instead slept on just a mattress. Most people in the working class had a radical left-wing view. So Kreuzberg turned into a critical neighborhood with constant demonstrations. Your guide will tell you about The Mother of all Street Fights. Visit SO36, a legendary music club, where anarchistic punk and new wave bands entertained audiences in the 1970’s and 1980’s and provoked the government and police. Discover Görli Park, the Central Park of Kreuzberg. Get to know Berlin’s Jack the Ripper. After two hours, see Kreuzberg from a different point of view. Say your goodbyes, then start your next adventure in Kreuzberg's famous nightlife, or if you prefer, to relax after this exploratory city tour.

Small Group Tour: "Wild Kreuzberg"

3. Small Group Tour: "Wild Kreuzberg"

Lose yourself in wild Kreuzberg on this walking tour. You will start at Kottbusser Tor, where everyday life meets Kreuzburg night culture. A Turkish market, Arabic restaurants and bistros, chic cafes alongside alternative clubs and bars line the square, which is divided down the middle by the famous overground rails of the U1 line. Walking past imposing houses from the beginning of the last century, and the Sozialpalast, you will reach the really happening Oranienstraße, the heart of the former SO36 postal district, as Berlin's punk district is still known. Here there are restaurants, bars and shops with typical Kreuzberg charm, the Berlin Home for the Blind, the Museum of Objects, Comic Shops and Boutiques. Over the Heinrich-Platz you will reach the Mariannenplatz, where the art-squat Bethanien, a former hospital, is to be found. Next-door in the Rauchhaus you will find more traces of the squatters' life of days gone by. Then walk to the Oberbaumbrücke, which symbolically links East and West Berlin.

Berlin: 3-Hour Kreuzberg History Tour

6. Berlin: 3-Hour Kreuzberg History Tour

The lively district of Kreuzberg, just south of Berlin’s city center, is a 19th-century workers' district that has seen it all over the years. Immigrants, capitalists, anarchists, artists, WWII bombs, and the Cold War decades have greatly influenced the district. It’s the one Berlin neighborhood that is known across Germany as the birthplace of the counterculture for which the whole city has become famous. On this 3-hour tour you’ll start off at the Oberbaumbruecke, Berlin’s most beautiful bridge. Your urban historian guide will take you past the main landmarks of SO36 (the eastern half of the district, named after the old postal code) and provide an insight into the area’s dramatic history and the fast-moving events that are shaping its future. Hear about the Kreuzberg way of life that attracted the likes of rock legends David Bowie and Iggy Pop to haunt these streets during the Cold War 70s. After seeing remnants of the Berlin Wall, your guide will tell you about creative uses of abandoned buildings and plots of land as art hubs. Learn about the importance of graffiti and street art to Kreuzberg’s look and feel, and discover Görlitzer Park, one of Berlin’s most popular green spaces and the 120-year-old market hall, where locals trade in artisanal and trendy food products. Experience the Turkish immigrant culture in shops and in colorful markets filled with flowers, spices, and delicious take-away foods. Sample delicacies such as deep-fried spinach and cheese gözleme, falafel sandwiches, and freshly pressed pomegranate juice. Having gained a rich sense of Kreuzberg’s kaleidoscopic culture, you’ll end the tour discussing the controversial riverside development plans that threaten to gentrify a district that prides itself on its authenticity. The tour can be done on foot, but is also offered as a bicycle tour. The bike tour covers more ground, but still stays within the district. There is a EUR 10.00 surcharge for bike rental, and for a small additional fee you can keep the bike until the next morning.

This is a great way to see a few neighbourhoods and sites it’s not easy to find on your own - especially if you’re only staying a few days. The distance covered was much further than stated and the tour guide set quite a quick pace. The guide is key to creating a welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately our guide wasn’t a natural people person - not much chat. Luckily we had an additional guide along to learn the route and he (Alex) was great!

Really interesting and informative tour with Anastasia. The tour went for 3 hours and I really enjoyed her company. We visited a shop selling interesting books and zines and she gave an insight in to the various social movements of the past.We visited lots of city murals, graffiti and even went to an art exhibition. It was great!

Very interesting insights into the Kreuzberg scene and history. You could tell that the guide put his heart and soul into it. He gave us very good tips for further exploring this interesting part of the city.
