Berlin: Reichstag Battlefield Tour

1. Berlin: Reichstag Battlefield Tour

Our journey begins at the meeting point on the southern side of the modern Hauptbahnhof (Main Station). Following a brief introduction to set the scene, we will make our way to the Moltke Bridge. This ornate red sandstone structure became the scene of some of Berlin's most deadly fighting. Here, we will orient ourselves to the Soviet 3rd Shock Army’s axis of advance and discuss the key challenges for both the encroaching Soviets and the German defenders. After making our way across the Moltke Bridge we will reach the then Interior Ministry, nicknamed the “Himmler House” in the old diplomatic quarter. Following a Soviet artillery barrage at point-blank range, we will discuss the horrific room-to-room fighting that occurred here. Continuing to ‘no man’s land,’ we will stand on the former Königsplatz and take stock of the 300m area that the 207th and 150th rifle divisions would have to cross before reaching the Reichstag. As we walk toward the Reichstag, we will discuss Hitler’s final moments in the Führer bunker only a few hundred meters away. Once at the foot of the Reichstag, you will hear the stories of Sergeant Yegorov and Sergeant Kantariya and how they raised special banner No.5 on the roof – signifying the end.

What people are saying about German Chancellery

The tour was very well designed and great fun. The tour is an absolute must for all those interested in history and especially those who are specifically interested in the Second World War. The guide was very knowledgeable and very accessible for questions and discussions. The tour is much more interesting than a visit to a museum, as you are told the story directly at the historical locations. And for the persuaded partners, family members or friends who are not interested in history, it is much more bearable than a visit to a museum.

There was a slight problem finding the guide, but this was not his fault in anyway. He was very patient waiting for me and in fact I was the only person on the tour. The company actually told me I was in the wrong place until I queried this and the guide, Matthew emailed me to sort things out.

An interesting short tour about the last days of the war. Viewed from the perspective of the Russian soldiers. Tour guide Matthew has a lot of knowledge and can tell like the best. Enjoyed!

My husband and I weren't a group. So we had a private tour. Our guide Markus did it great, very detailed and still entertaining. We saw corners that we would otherwise have passed.

My family and I really enjoyed the tour and our guide was really knowledgeable and very flexible about our needs. Thanks.
