Rijksmuseum Slot Loevestein is a 14th century castle in central Netherlands. It is located at the westernmost tip of the Munnikenland nature park at the point where the rivers Waal and Maas meet. It is a place with an eventful history. A place that has contributed to shaping Dutch identity and democracy. One of the most visited medieval castles in the country, Loevestein Castle was first built as a home for a Knight, then expanded into a fortress and was later used as a state prison. It was an important part of the Hollandse Waterlinie and since 2021, Loevestein is on the list of the Unesco World Heritage Sites as such. During WWII, the castle was utilised as a storage facility for the National Archives and important works of art. Many Dutch know Loevestein Castle as the infamous prison from which Hugo de Groot, the influential lawyer and theologist in the 17th century, escaped in a book chest. This legendary story is told at schools across the country. It’s this fascinating history that makes a visit to Loevestein Castle absolutely worthwhile. For kids Loevestein has a lot to offer for kids as well. Upon arrival, we will hand them the key to Loevestein. With this key, they can discover all kinds of things about the history and stories of the castle and the fortress. Learn to shoot musket. Mix the right ingredients for gunpowder to shake the on of the towers to its foundations. Make sure that the fortress does not flood when the water starts to rise! And… how did Hugo de Groot escape from the castle? Wander through the wall stairs, stroll along the ramparts and discover all kinds of secret spots and test your fitness on our challenging climbing course.
