Full description
Depart Funchal and journey to the start of your walk, where you will follow the routes of the "levada" irrigation system developed in the 16th century by Madeira's first settlers. Descend from the plateau of Paul da Serra to the Rabaçal guesthouse and walk to the waterfall of the Levada do Risco. Continue towards the Levada das 25 Fontes, dominated by moorland at its highest point. Walk until you reach a small lagoon at the bottom of an enormous cliff, and marvel at the sight of 25 natural springs cascading into the lake. Return along a different path, passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south of the island. Admire a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna along the way.

Interesting experience. The organization has to be improved: the appointment was at 8.00 / 8.30 at the hotel but the minibus arrived at 9.10 We have not received any communication regarding the timetable change. We got up early and ready at 8.00 to be in time, but we had to wait for an hour for the pick up.

Thoroughly enjoyable small group 11 km hike with Charlotte as tour guide. Charlotte was observant as to hiker abilities and instructed the group in safety tips. We hiked up to the waterfall and “25” spigot waterfalls all around. We walked along Levadas and thru a dark and scary tunnel using our iPhone flashlights! It was a moderately difficult hike. Charlotte pointed out flowers, heather trees, giant dandelions, and more about the local environment and history of the levadas. She gave 100% to our group and made the hike a very enjoyable day.

The trip suited us perfectly. Nice and quiet drive to the starting point. The guide Sarah handles the group and the hike excellently. Apart from a few sections with stairs both up and down, it is an easy hike. The reason I do not give full pot is that there is pure tourist route. If you want a hike where there is greater tranquility, you should choose another hike.
