The sun rises over your hotel as you set out on your walking tour adventure. You'll sip coffee or a drink on your way up to the base of the peak, looking out at all the stunning beauty this place has to offer. As we head from sea level up to the base at 5,964ft (1818m), you'll pass beautiful flora and fauna. Finally, we'll begin our mighty walk up the mighty Pico Arieiro up to the highest point on the island, the Pico Ruivo peak at 6107 ft (1862m). Finally, we'll walk down to Teixeira where you'll be comfortably transferred back to your hotel. This hike is definitely worth doing, and having a guide helps during some of the more difficult parts of the climb. There’s an uphill battle at the beginning and at the very end, but the hike in general is medium-difficult. There is the possibility of fog blocking your view or heat weighing you down, but I really can’t stress enough how worth it this hike is. If you’re not in the best shape I suggest going slow and conserving energy, the views are really not to be missed.

We chose a hike that underestimated our age. My husband is 81, I am 64. We managed the hike only with the help of our guide. He is an amazing worker, he made sure that we completed the course safely, he gave us advice and help. We are very grateful to our tour guide for his patience and professionalism. We would advise others to assess their options responsibly. We did not have the experience of active travel, but we are proud to have completed the course,

We were a bit unsure about booking an excursion but ended up being so glad we did. Doing the hike with a guide was well worth it - I can imagine the trek being a bit confusing without one if it's not something you do regularly. Our guide was attentive and knew a lot about the trail and the history of Madeira. The walk itself was stunning, amazing views and an absolute highlight of our trip. We booked the day before and texted the number provided the evening before to check our pick up time which they helpfully sent over so we knew what time to be outside for rather than waiting around within the hour window given. One pair from our group did have to turn back not long after we set off. A warning to those looking to book - there are a lot of steps going down (at the start) and then climbing up (toward the end) it is hard on the knees. We had a group of widely varied ages - do not be put off but just try to make an honest decision on what your body is capable of before booking.
