Formed in an eruption 890,000 years ago, the São Vicente Caves are a series of lava tubes that stretch deep into the earth. With average heights between 15 and 20 feet, and an overall length of 0.6 miles, the caves are perfectly suited to exploration.  You’ll begin your tour with pickup from your hotel in Funchal. As you head into the caves, marvel at the undulating rock formations that descend into the earth, brilliantly illuminated to highlight their every crevice. Venturing deeper into the caves, you’ll come upon a pool of crystal-clear water that brilliantly reflects the surface of the caves above it.  After exploring the one-of-a-kind caves, head into the Volcanism Center, an interactive museum that will further contextualize the history of the stunning natural site. Watch a 3-D film about the formation of the islands, and learn about the composition of different volcanic rocks. Afterwards, you’ll be dropped off at your accommodation in Funchal.
