From Olhão: Ria Formosa 3-Island Full-Day Tour

1. From Olhão: Ria Formosa 3-Island Full-Day Tour

Begin your island-hopping trip with your captain who will act as your tour guide. First, stop at Lighthouse Island, where you can visit its village, get a drink, go to the beach, and explore the neighborhoods of beautiful houses. Continue on to Culatra Island for a few hours for a picnic lunch or visit one of the local restaurants. Culatra Island has beautiful swimming areas, if you prefer to play in the water instead of eating here. Stop on the island for 2 hours to enjoy lunch and to explore the village. Next, make your way to Armona Island or Deserta Island, depending on the season. In the summertime, Deserta Island hosts a beautiful, wild beach with no buildings. Explore either the Ria Formosa for a swim, or take in the Atlantic Ocean side of the island. The beautiful Armona Island is inhabited all year-long with locals and vacationers. Discover its deserted beach and take in the tranquil surroundings.

Faro: Dolphin and Wildlife Watching in the Atlantic Ocean

2. Faro: Dolphin and Wildlife Watching in the Atlantic Ocean

Discover different species of cetaceans, birds and other marine life on this exciting experience in the Algarve. Leaving from Faro, cross through Ria Formosa Natural Park towards the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the views of the Barrier Islands (Deserta and Culatra) or the marshlands as you cruise to the coastline. Once you reach the ocean, spot wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and porpoises. Whale season is between February and May, while dolphins are resident all year round. You will also see birds such as gannets and shearwaters flying overhead. When it comes to fish, spot species such as ocean sunfish, blue sharks, and hammerhead sharks, as well as a few marine turtles. A team of two marine biologists will help you find as many species as possible during your time on the ocean, and give you facts and information about the fauna and the surroundings.  After spotting a group of dolphins, enjoy 30 minutes free to watch the group. Feel free to ask any questions regarding dolphins and other marine life to one of your guides and take the opportunity to learn more about how biologists collect data for scientific research on dolphin populations. Once your observation time is over, return to Ria Formosa and cruise back to Faro.

From Olhão: Ria Formosa Sunset Tour

3. From Olhão: Ria Formosa Sunset Tour

After boarding your boat, head out into the sheltered waters of Ria Formosa. Depending on the season you will get to discover one of two islands. In May, stop on Armona Island and drink a coffee on the beach or take a swim and explore the island. From May to September your first stop will be at Praia Deserta, one of the most pristine beaches in the Algarve. From the beach, head to the village of Ilha da Armona and enjoy a refreshing drink while you contemplate the amazing views. The final stop on your tour is at a deserted beach on Culatra Island, a small community of 1000 people that is to be a sustainability project by 2030. Here you can relax and, in summer, enjoy some swimming. After about 40 minutes to enjoy the beach and the sunset, you'll board your boat for the return trip to Olhão.

From Faro: Dolphin-Watching & Wildlife

4. From Faro: Dolphin-Watching & Wildlife

Discover the wildlife in Faro's waters on a dolphin-watching cruise aboard a speedboat. Have the opportunity to see dolphins, birds, and, if you're lucky, turtles and small sharks. Learn about the marine animals with the onboard marine biologist. After making your own way to the meeting point, board the boat and cruise through the Rio Formosa Natural Park. Admire the landscape of winding waterways as you make your way to Cape Santa Maria, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Rio Formosa river. Upon arrival at the ocean, keep your eye out for local dolphins. Enjoy the best chance of seeing them on this morning cruise because the dolphins approach the coast looking for food at this time. As well as dolphins, look out for birds, turtles, and harmless sharks, and feel free to ask the marine biologist questions about the wildlife. On the way back to Faro, enjoy different views of the natural park due to the changing tides of the Rio Formosa.

We really enjoyed the trip. Saw a pod of about 30 bottle nosed dolphins. They were very playful and put on a show. Unfortunately our trip had to be cut a little short due to another sick passenger. So we didn’t get to see much other wildlife. Would also be nice if our guides would have been more interactive with the passengers and given more information on the wildlife or maybe the ocean or maybe the history of the city of Faro. Something that would make it more informative and exciting.

Really nice tour guides! We also made an effort to ensure that there was something to see (we also saw dolphins, that was incredibly beautiful!) and a lot was said about it and questions were answered. We will definitely book this tour again! Our guides were called Pedro and Suzanne (hope it's spelled right).

A very nice experience that allowed us to observe dolphins while respecting their natural habitat, all precautions were taken and explained not to stress or scare them! Pedro and Juan gave us very interesting information about the local fauna. Thank you !

Although the weather didn't fully worked out, the trip was quite nice and interesting. Carlos is also a great guide. Highly recommended.

We had to search for a while, but in the end we saw a lot of dolphins!
