Athens: Full Day Trip to Nafplio and Ancient Epidaurus

1. Athens: Full Day Trip to Nafplio and Ancient Epidaurus

Depart Athens with a friendly escort (archaeologist) by bus from the Halandri Metro station and reach Nafplio where there are various alternative options to discover the hidden gems of the city. There is plenty of time to climb the 999 steps of the Castle of Palamidi (or let the bus drive you to it) and admire the wide view of the region along with the endless beauty of the Argolic Gulf from the top of the hill. Naflpio used to be the capital of Greece before Athens and its architecture has venetian, byzantine, ottoman and modern greek influences. Admire the main attractions like Bourtzi Castle and Acronauplia as well as the various picturesque squares in the city center. Observe the colorful venetian houses that attract your eyes with the bougainvilleas hanging flashily from the balconies. You have the chance to enrich your trip by visiting the Komboloi Museum and the distillery of Tsipouro, Ouzo or Mastiha known as “ouzo experience” in the most traditional district of the city. Enjoy a greek lunch break in a cozy tavern and be one with the locals. Later on, travel into history by visiting the ancient theater of Epidaurus. In the antiquity, Epidaurus was a sanatorium, connected intensively with the Asclepeion healing temples. Asclepeion was the 5* hotel of the ancient times and is considered as the origin of the medical science. Nowadays, Epidaurus is most known as the theater with the greatest acoustic of all times and still hosts the Festival of Epidaurus every summer. Feel the aura of the ancient tragedians who through their interpretations led the audience to “catharsis”, the purification and purgation of emotions.

"Bill"(if that's your real name...) was a fantastic, engaging, funny, and superbly knowledgeable guide. He's actually an archeologist with a masters degree, so his knowledge is exceptional. He was able to flow with the dynamics of the group and fluidly intersperse humor, history, mythology and science (with excellent English, all the while keeping his eyes on the road)! This tour is an absolute must and one we will never forget. He offered us the option to either sit down for lunch or do more of a 'grab and go' thing so we can keep walking around and touring. He made sure that everyone in our group was happy with the decision we made to sit down and eat. We did so many different things on this tour and felt so accomplished at the end of the day! Cannot recommend this tour group highly enough! (Their communication is also superb whether through WhatsApp emails or phone) On the 2-hour drive back we had very interesting philosophical discussions with him. Great great great!

Great to see the countryside and the beautiful town of Nafplio. Our guide drove us back through the mountains and the views were stunning. The only negative - and not her fault - it was hard to hear her at the back of the minibus without a microphone. If you're taking this tour definitely travel to the meeting point by metro, the morning traffic in Athens is horrendous!

Bill is great. It was a lot of fun and he answered all of the questions. At the end we got some tips for the city. A very interesting tour, I can recommend it to others

Great round trip, very worth seeing and impressive landscape and sights. Everything is well organized!

This tour is so enjoyable with the best guide ever "Bill- an easier name he gave us".
