Full description
This wonderful full-day tour of the Yorkshire Dales and Fountains Abbey begins in York city center and explores some of the real highlights the Dales and the breathtaking beauty of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park. The order of this small-group day trip from York travels into Wensleydale, making stops at the world-famous Wenselydale Creamery and its terrific Visitor Centre and the stunning Aysgarth Falls, a remarkably beautiful series of low, wide waterfalls which featured in the Hollywood movie ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’. The tour climbs up the spectacular Buttertubs Pass (weather permitting) - one of the most picturesque roads in Great Britain, where you'll stop to peer into the "Butter Tubs" and look across into Swaledale.

The tour passes through the market towns of Leyburn and the historic village of Middleham, with a photo opportunity outside Middleham Castle (once the family home of Richard III). For many the highlight of the day will be the magnificent estate of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Park is home to the well-preserved ruins of Fountains Abbey, in its day one of the UK’s leading Cistercian Monasteries.

During two hours at your leisure you can explore the superb abbey ruins, enjoy a riverside walk around the estate, stroll through the world-renowned Georgian Water Gardens, follow walking trails through Studley Royal Park and have coffee and cake overlooking the estate’s glorious lake at the Lakeside Café. As you leave Fountains Abbey you’ll enjoy a drive out through the Medieval Deer Park, where herds from three species of deer roam freely across the vast estate grounds. Finally you’ll travel back to York at the end of this enthralling day in the Yorkshire Dales.

It was not clear to me or my 3 friends that we would have to pay to enter Fountains Abbey. This would have been considered an oversight, but when I was asked to pay up when leaving the Middleton Castle Ruins (Richard III) I was embarrassed. I was also asked to mention it to my friends and ask them to go back and pay! This spoiled what would have been a wonderful day trip. There hadn't been anyone in the booth at the entrance when we entered and no mention of payment. I don't enjoy being embarrassed in that fashion.

Nice and extensive tour

The tour was well organized and informative. The guide was always friendly and helpful. The photo stops are well chosen and given the scope of the activities you have time to look at everything in peace, but in Fountain's Abbey you could have planned 30 more minutes. Definitely recommendable :)

Fountains Abbey is beautiful. The Yorkshire Dales are also beautiful, but it is a shame that you only see this from the minibus and not many photo stops are on the way.
