Full description
Early evening is the most atmospheric time to experience York, the shops have closed, the tourist hordes have departed, the ancient streets lie at your disposal. This hour-long walking tour is for anyone seeking a concise, informal and entertaining introduction to York in the company of an expert local guide.

Discover why the Minster is known as a Minster rather than a cathedral, why all the streets in York are called Gates and all the gates are called Bars. Start your tour in Exhibition Square, and see 2000 years of history simply by turning in a circle. Take in all the must-see sights including the Minster, the medieval walls and the Shambles, the inspiration for Diagon Alley. Take the opportunity to enter the maze of ancient cut-throughs and back-passages, or Snickelways as they are known locally.

Although this isn't a ghost tour there are plenty of gruesome true stories to be heard. By the end of the walk you will be ready for your dinner reservation having tasted the full flavour of a city which still has Viking mud on its boots and a tang of cocoa in the air.

My husband and I pre-booked this walking tour before arriving in York. We were both so pleased with it. Alfred was our guide. He was so well informed about the history and architecture of York, and such a pleasant person as well. There were only three customers (cold night) so it felt intimate and cozy. I would highly recommend his tour as it’s a great introduction to York that will make you appreciate the city’s unique qualities so much more.

Despite the cold, windy weather, Alfred was already there waiting for us when we arrived 10min early. He brought us through York on a brilliantly informative tour that was easy to follow, and answered all our questions patiently, providing us with more info about the city. I'm interested in British history, and he knew so much about it! His knowledge was able to link York's history with the greater context of Britain at each point in time. We all learnt so much from him. Would absolutely recommend this for anyone, as my whole family with different ages, English abilities and interests loved him equally.

Really informative and interesting. Alfred was welcoming and friendly. We were lucky in as much that my husband and l had Alfred to ourselves. Felt rather guilty about that especially as it was a bitterly cold evening. Great time though to see the city as the tourists have gone and you can see the true magnificence of the city
