Full description
This tour will explore the rich and often untold history of African Americans in the nation’s capital. This tour highlights significant areas starting with a drive to Cedar Hill in the historic community of Anacostia -home of the famous freed slave and abolitionist Fredrick Douglass, a renowned civil right activist, lawyer, and writer during his life.

After taking a glimpse into the past at the Home of Fredrick Douglas, proceed to Howard University - one of the oldest black universities in the United States. On the way to Howard University, you will drive by Lincoln Park to visit the statue of educator, activist, and founder of the National Council of Negro Women - Mary McLeod Bethune.

Following your visit to the beautiful Howard University campus, drive through LeDriot Park, Shaw Neighborhood, and Historic “U” Street. Home to the largest urban African-American community in the United States in the early 1900’s, it created its own “Black Broadway” - a home to entertainment legends from the past and present. The next stop on the tour is the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum to discover how the course of the Civil War was impacted by these disenfranchised soldiers.

You will then take a journey into downtown DC to the sites of the national headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women, Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue, the White house and the M.L.K. Memorial. As you head downtown, you will enter the Logan Circle historic district to see the historic Metropolitan AME Church and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council house. The final stop on the tour is the African American History & Culture Museum where you will learn about Civil Rights heroes and icons who changed the history of our great Nation.

This was an amazing tour. Our guide, Deion, was absolutely amazing. He took us to great sites and gave us a very understandable background story at each site. So we truly appreciated the significance and real importance of each site. Deion really captured the attention of the college age students in our group. I don’t even think they blinked when Deion talked, especially the last story that tied the events together. I can’t thank Deion enough for putting his heart and soul into our tour. It brings tears to my eyes to imagine all of the hearts and minds that Deion has touched. (Mine included) DEION is THE BEST tour guide we have ever had. If you are looking for a life changing tour, then take this one with Deion. We are very grateful to this tour company and Deion. Very safe and good driver too.

the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable on everything dealing with Washington DC and not just limited to the things related to African American history. this trip covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. The only thing I would request is that they give written directions of how to get back to the area that you were originally picked up at.
