Boyne Valley: Full-Day Celts and Castles Guided Tour
- Duration: 8 hours
Per group up to 7
Our tour into the Boyne Valley was led by Matt (from Hilltoptreks). This tour gave a very in depth look at the Boyne Valley and the history that transpired there. Matt gave us a good primer into the kings and queens and the goings on in those bygone days. As we have learned, history is written by the winner, but in no stretch of the imagination is that always the truth. This deeper understanding helped to understand why some of these areas are revered to this day by the Irish. The structures we visited were magnificent. Newgrange site is fabulous. Construction that has lasted for hundreds of years and in which scholars are still trying to decode the intended uses. Very thought-provoking, indeed. There were stops for graveyards (still in use) and Celtic crosses. The hill at Tara holds many historic mantles, one being the place where St, Patrick defied the kings when they were there to be anointed.
What a fun trip and day out of Dublin. I love Irish history and this tour was therefore fantastic. Alex our mini van driver was very knowledgeable and very courteous. He provided us with many interesting stories concerning the sights we saw. Even though it was a misty/drizzly day loved it. Newgrange was spectacular as well as running around, literally the Hill of Tara. Alex took us thru the Battle of the Boyne area and gave us such a fine history of it that I really enjoyed going there after hearing so much concerning that battle. The mini van was so comfortable and easy to get to know others on the bus that added to the fun of the day. 3 others of us hung out together for the rest of the trip which also made it special. Alex also to us to a small place to eat for lunch and it was Fantastic!
Great day out! Our driver/guide got us to the Newgrange site pretty much before anyone else so we easily got admission. Newgrange was very impressive and the newgrange guide very informative and conversational. We ended up having a group philosophy sesh inside at the end of the official guided tour with the tour guide which was great food for thought. Entertaining and insightful commentary on the road trip by our driver/guide between sites. He went out of his way to ensure we had a fantastic experience. Ticked off all the major Boyne Valley attractions and made some great friends too!
Tour guide managed to get entry tickets to Newgrange Tomb. We visited all the other sites described online. There was enough time for breaks, and lunch during the day tour. I definitely recommend this tour to visitors who want to know a little more about the Celts and the monastic settlements in Ireland. Excellent historic and cultural experience.
This tour was amazing! Johnny was excellent at wrangling the cats (one of whom was more like the chicken from Moana and kept wandering off), explaining the history of the Celts and Christianity in Ireland, and even recommended and excellent restaurant (best dinner we had in Ireland and top 5 meals ever).
