Full description
Enjoy a 5-hour private tour of the city that became the center of Jewish life in Russia at the end of the 19th century. After pickup from your accommodations, start your tour with a visit to Theater Square. Jewish composer Anton Rubinstein established the Conservatoire here, where many globally-esteemed musicians studied, including violinist David Oistrakh and violincellist Mstislav Rastropovich.

Visit the district of Kolomna, the center of Jewish life in the city in the 19th century, where you’ll visit the Grand Choral Synagogue created in the Moorish style. Drive along the Nevsky Prospect and see an unusual Wawelberg house as well as the luxurious mansions on the English Embankment, built for Jewish financiers like Ginsberg and Polyakov.

Afterwards, ride to Vasilievsky Island and stop at the Academy of Fine Arts, the institution that gave the world great Russian-Jewish painters like Isaac Levitan and Marc Chagall. Finally, visit the Yesod Center and learn about its activities in St. Petersburg. If the option is selected on booking, visit the Museum of Ethnography to explore the exhibition “History and Culture of the Jews in Russia”, covering the period from the Biblical era to life in the Pale of Settlement.
