Top 7 Things To Do in Setubal

A break from the norm, this thriving fishing town is just 30 miles from Lisbon, and a delightful place to go even if it's a tad off the beaten track. This overlooked gem has beautiful nature and a national park nearby, plus remote, unspoiled, and often deserted beaches.

Praia do Figueirinha

Praia do Figueirinha

Two beauties in one, this stunning beach lies within Arrabida National Park, with pine covered cliffs, calm and clear water, and golden sands. The sea is a blissful temperature in summer.

Arrabida National Park

Arrabida National Park

Rich vegetation, fine beaches, and estuary wildlife including dolphins, flamingos and storks, live in Arrabida National Park. The Marine Reserve is also great for dolphin watching and boat trips.

Convento de Jesus

Set in a nice open square, this 15th century church with Manueline (late Gothic) architecture is also still inhabited by Poor Clare nuns. The main chapel is a sight to see -- covered in green and white tiles.

City Museum

City Museum

Dig into Setubal's fascinating past in this former convent decked out with 16th century paintings, sacred sculpture, gold and silver pieces, archeology, and coins.

Alcacer do Sal

Alcacer do Sal

Castles and parishes line this town, and its a paradise for sailing, windsurfing, and angling. The Sado Estuary Natural Reserve has lush lagoons, blue rivers, streams and marshes.

Castelo de Palmela

Castelo de Palmela

Everyone loves a castle, and this huge fortified complex stands atop the eastern edge of the Serra de Arrabida hills, and has stunning views over both the Tagus and Sado estuaries.

Cetóbriga

Traces of the stone tanks from this former fish salting business are visible, plus foundations of former houses, tombs, and baths. Artist impressions also depict how it used to be.

Planning Your Setubal Visit

Many people just head to the Algarve. Is it really worth a visit?

Definitely, especially if you enjoy a more laid back and slower pace of life, away from too many tourists. Having so much history, nature, and hills in such close proximity provides so much to see and do.  It boasts a wonderful sense of tranquility and marvelous seafood restaurants.

I like clubbing and going out at night. Is Setubal good for this?

There's a few clubs, which are mainly commercial dance oriented, so it's perfect if that's your groove. If you're looking for something more eclectic, this isn't really the place for that. O Lado Negro Bar plays more alternative, goth, and metal music. Bar Incognito plays indie/alternative music.

What people are saying about Setubal

We loved our trip to Arrábida. And would reccomend this company.

This trip was a highlight for us. Even though we started out with less than ideal weather we had a great day which was due to our awesome guide Joanna! I can’t rate her highly enough she had great English and was really passionate about the history. She went out of her way to make the trip special for us as we were a group of 2 and we even got to do some extra bits as we finished at the winery slightly earlier than planned. Having Joanna as our guide made the trip for us and it was the perfect way to spend our last day. She even gave us some good tips for somewhere to go out afterwards.

Niece trip with a good guide but could be improved on the wine side.

Good sightseeing tour with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide. Great for experiencing the Lisbon area/surroundings in a day. On the wine side it was more set up as a sales trip than an educational trip. Not showing or explaining the particulars of the wines in any detail apart from the presentation and tasting in the sales rooms. Niece enough but I would have liked something a bit deeper into the production methods etc even if I realize this would have been eating into the sightseeing bit of the trip so I guess it is a balance one must make to keep everybody happy.

The tour was great, and Rui was fabulous!

I loved the tour with Rui. Rui is a wonderful professional guide, and at the same time very easy going and fun to be with. There were many highlights in the tour, a very beautiful area, but the best part for me was an amazing Fish restaurant that Rui brought us to, which was super yummy. Rui made everything to make us happy during the tour, and he succeeded! :)

Excellent driver who saved my good memories of Portugal

Everything about arranged transfer was as agreed - punctual and comfortable. But the most important thing is that I dropped my cell phone in the car, but the driver was honest enough to keep it safe, and now I expect that your local provider will send me back to Serbia. Very kind and professional. Best recommendations to Hi Portugal company!

our guide was excellent and a very good driver as well

I would recommend that another small vineyard be included with the first one we visited. The Foseca wine was not tasty and although the vineyard was interesting they were too busy. The rest of the day was very nice. Margaret Cozine
