Full description
Follow an enthusiastic local guide on a walking tour highlighting the striking and experimental architecture found in Rotterdam. Explore the city’s smart and bold building styles while hearing about Rotterdam’s bold urge for non-stop innovation. Start your tour on the rooftop of Het Witte Huis (weekend tours) with a stunning view over Markthal, the Cube Houses, the Erasmus bridge, the Willems bridge, and De Rotterdam. Afterward, walk right through the famous Markthal designed by MVRDV. Discover Rotterdam’s new city park including a public stage for music and dance at the recently refurbished Grotekerkplein. Pass Dudok’s ‘Dudok’ and arrive at the Timmerhuis, a beautiful inner-city redevelopment project in which renowned Rotterdam-based architectural firm OMA merged a municipal office block from the 1950s with a pixellated steel-and-glass structure. Visit a rooftop terrace (weekdays) with a fantastic view over Markthal, Coolsingel boulevard, City Hall, and the city center. Next, see historical and post-war monuments like the post office and de Bijenkorf-warehouse. Pass Forum on your way to Schouwburgplein and at the Kruiskadeplein, get to see Groothandelsgebouw, Central Station and de Delftse Poort, followed by the remarkable Calypso, Pauluskerk and de Unie. Marvel at the Sonneveld House and Het Nieuwe Instituut in the Museumpark. Arrive at the latest eye catcher Depot Boijmans van Beuningen, a stunning piece of architecture design home to the world’s first public art depot. Listen as your expert guide tells you all about the concept and construction of the reflecting panels creating the double-curved facade, and learn about the aviation engineering techniques that needed to be applied to operate the huge entrance doors.

We are part of an Architectural Practice from Dublin and our visit was intended to take in the most recent developments in Rotterdam. I had lived there between 1979-1982 and the developments over a short span was enormous. From the redevelopment of the train station as an Iconic building in a short period to the Markthal building and the new high rise office building De Rotterdam made for an interesting architectural with the historic footnotes added. Anet was a great host and interesting with her comments and observations with her added book material to illustrate her points with regard to history and place. The tour itself can only cover a small part of the architectural past that is Rotterdam but lots of exciting building are in the pipeline for a progressive city. The water taxi ride was novel to us and an interesting break form the architectural jargon which may be alien to some tourists.
