What people are saying about Monteverde
Booked this tour on GetYourGuide in San Jose. Was such a nice day tour out of San Jose. Juan speaks very good English and was a great guide, he was attentive, friendly, helpful but also respected our own space. Monteverde was amazing - there was a local guide who led us on the hike and he was very knowledgable and the hanging bridges and the the rainforest were simply breath taking. Other people on the tour were super friendly and nice too. The lunch was at a really nice restaurant providing high quality local cuisine. Not like a typical tourist spot. This is a must-go experience!
This is a family farm. Orlando, the enthusiastic guide, works the farm with his father and practices sustainable farming. His English is very good. You will feel welcome from the start as he walks you through the farm explaining their transition to sustainable farming. You will have hands on with milking, feeding the animals and tortilla making. Orlando's mother, Yolanda is a light hearted, hard working woman. she will offer you refreshment of coffee, fresh cheese (that you will observe being made) and the homemade tortilla. This was a great surprise ending our Monteverde visit.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable (apologies for not remembering his name - we met many amazing folks during our visit to Costa Rica). His knowledge of the forest was beyond expectation. For example, he uncovered for us a tiny orchid that was half the size of a little fingernail. Among the gazillion of flora and fauna species in the forest, he recognized the plant, turned over a leaf (hiding the flower) and there it was. At best, we would have seen and experienced less than 3% of the forest's wonders without his expert guidance.
This is a wonderful chance to get to know a Costa Rican family who loves the land. I've lived in Costa Rica for 25 years, so I'm kind of over really "touristy" stuff. This is the real deal. I brought my parents who are farmers in their 70s from the USA and we all loved it. Wonderful people, a beautiful farm, and an example of how Costa Rica and its culture has evolved over the last 3 generations.
Karina was the hanging bridges guide, and she was great. She went out of her way to spot bugs, monkeys, butterflies, humming birds, etc. What we didn't know was our tour bus was split between activities, and our driver seemed put-out that this causes confusion.
