How many days should you plan for a Marrakech desert tour?

Tours of Marrakech's picturesque desert vary in length from a single afternoon to an adventurous five days. To help you pick the right option, here are some of the best things to do on each.

1 day

Enjoy a camel tour through Marrakech's rural palm groves, race over the dunes on a quad bike, or even do both! Either way, be sure to stop for tea at a traditional Berber village.

2 days

Take in the scenic delights en route to Zagora - among them Aït Benhaddou, an ancient city that has been the backdrop to Hollywood movies from "Lawrence of Arabia" to "Gladiator."

3 days

Trek out to the Sahara's famous windswept dunes at Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga, spotting wildlife by day and camping Bedouin-style beneath the stars at night.

4 days

From Aït Benhaddou, detour through Ouarzazate – "Door of the Desert" – and continue over the Atlas Mountains through the historic village of Tamgrout and Irqui National Park.

5 days

Take in all of the above and throw in hikes along the breathtaking Todgha and Dadès Gorges, as well as smaller pleasures like flamingo-watching and traditional music shows!

Planning Your Visit

How much does it cost?

Marrakech desert tours and safaris start at around €50 for an afternoon, with prices reaching closer to €1,000 for all-inclusive day trips lasting four to five days. Discount deals can be found if you book online, but be sure to compare comfort factors like transportation, accommodation, and food, especially for longer tours.

What's the weather like?

Marrakech swelters through hot and humid summers that can reach upwards of 104°F. However, despite the desert landscape, it experiences seasonal rains through its damp and mild winters.

What People Are Saying About Marrakech

Amazing scenery, great driver Aluli, wonderful sun rise, but exhausting

Amazing sights to been seen in Morocco and met some lovely people. The Sahara camel trip is an experience I will never forget. Beautiful and awesome view at 5am and camel treck in the dark to see the sunrise. Please be aware that this excursion is not for the feint hearted. It is tiring and hard going, especially in the desert - we had no sleep as the heat was so intense inside the Berber tents. Do not bother upgrading as you can sort it when you arrive. There were plenty of tents for couples. Would be better in the cooler months. Driver Aluli was smashing and informative. A more detailed day to day itinerary would have been more helpful before the trip. Overall, worth the money you pay.

Great experience and landscapes, but long journey

We didn't really know what to expect. Overall it was a long journey, we drove every day (we had a good driver) - but on the first two days we made several stopps to take pictures or to visit places (e.g. Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge/Canyon was very nice). Even though we spent a lot of time in the Minibus, we also saw a lot of the country. I never expected to see so much different landscapes and villages. The camel-ride, sleeping under stars and sunset/sunrise made us forget everything else! Definitly worth it...and i would also pay more for that...

Once in a lifetime experience, would recommend to everyone!

It was all around a very awesome experience and it was exactly what I expected to get out of the trip. Our guide didn’t speak much English but was still very nice and always pointed out great places to take pictures and explained the random landmarks along the way. I went in late June (during Ramadan) so it was very hot already, July/Aug might be pushing it. Our van had A/C also so couldn’t imagine doing it without! The accommodations were good too – they each had pools! The only feedback I have is that the restaurants we stopped at along the way were on the pricier side so definitely be prepared for that (a lot of businesses also took Euros) and the guides should be a little more transparent/organized on what the agenda is/where we are going. Will recommend to all my mates!

Excellent guided tour, great food, and people.

This was a great experience. I would do it again! I would recommend it to anyone looking to see more of Morocco's beauty, gracious people, and the rich culture. Talking to locals and getting to participate in the music and food was a fun and genuine experience. I'm not usually one for tours, but this was excellent. The highlight of my trip to Morocco.

Such a fun experience with friendly staff and cute camels!

I never thought I would think that camels are cute, but they really grew on me after meeting them! It was all around a really easy, safe, and pleasant experience - from the online booking being quick, secure, and easy, to the driver picking me and my friend up at our riad in the medina in an air-conditioned van. The drive out to the palm grove only took about 15 minutes. Our camel ride was the perfect length of time too - about 45 minutes, which you don't really need more than that. The staff was super friendly and took a lot of pictures for us to help us remember our adventure. The pricing is also really reasonable. Highly recommend!
