From London: 5-Day York & the Lake District Small Group Tour

Your journey begins by departing London and traveling to your first stop, the university city of Cambridge. With alumni including Stephen Hawking and Isaac Newton, you will be able to visit some of the famous colleges or perhaps partake in the Cambridge tradition of punting; a boat ride along the river. After lunch, continue north to the historic city of Lincoln. Here you can visit the imposing Cathedral; once the world’s tallest building, or explore the historic castle which is home to an original copy of the Magna Carta, written in 1215. After time to explore, travel to York, where you will spend the night.
This morning, your first stop is the Victorian spa town of Harrogate, one of Yorkshire’s most charming towns. Next, enter the beautiful green valleys of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, meandering along country lanes towards the stunning Asygarth Falls, which featured in Robin Hood: prince of thieves. After lunch in the traditional town of Hawes, enjoy the scenery on your way into the Lake District. This afternoon, visit the village of Grasmere, where you can try the famous gingerbread and visit Dove Cottage; home of the famous poet William Wordsworth. Afterwards, travel to Lake Windermere, where you will spend the next two nights.
Today, your journey will take you around the highlights of the Lake District. Start by traveling round Lake Windermere to Hill Top; the home of famous Lakeland author Beatrix Potter, who wrote the tales of Peter rabbit. Next absorb the mountain scenery in the Lake District as you take in the Honister Pass; one of Britain’s most dramatic roads. After lunch in the market town of Keswick, visit the ancient monument of Castlerigg stone circle; thought to be over 4,000-years-old. This afternoon, travel around the beautiful Ullswater Lake, stopping at Aira Force Waterfall. Then, it’s time to return to Lake Windermere, with time to explore and perhaps take a boat trip.
This morning, travel back to York, where you’ll have the afternoon free to explore this beautiful and historic city. There’s lots to do here, including; a visit to the majestic York Minister, taking a walk along the city walls, exploring the world-renowned National Railway museum, discovering the Roman and Viking history of the city, wandering through the historic central streets known as ‘The Shambles’, trying a traditional Yorkshire pudding, or joining one of the famous ghost tours. Tonight, stay in York once again.
Your final day begins by heading towards the charming countryside of the Peak District National Park, as you make your way towards Chatsworth House. Chatsworth is one of Britain’s grandest stately homes; famous for its connection to pride and prejudice and as the home of the Duke of Devonshire. After ample time to explore this stunning house and its grounds, travel south to Stratford-upon-Avon; the home of the world’s greatest playwright; William Shakespeare. Here, discover Shakespeare’s story and visit many places with a connection to him, including his birthplace. After this it will be time to make your way back to London where your adventure concludes.
