The small town of Lisse, south of Amsterdam and Haarlem, is home to the Keukenhof tulip garden, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from the world over each year.
Built in 1642, the castle is by far the most prominent building in the village. Unlike the gardens, it's available to visit all year round. Definitely worth a stop!
The Juliana Pavilion houses this exhibition that tells of the rise of the tulip in the Netherlands. From the Golden Age to the present, discover its economic and cultural impact!
Really, it doesn't get more Dutch than this... riding a bike through endless fields of tulips. It's the essential way to experience Keukenhof!
The Dutch word for pancakes is "pannenkoeken," a staple of local cuisine. Make it a quintessentially Dutch day and stop by for an afternoon snack at the restaurant!
If photos aren't enough, you can also buy colorful bulbs from the local shop. Make sure you check customs regulations of your destination or home country first, though.
Keukenhof is only open from March until May, so visiting times are very limited - check in advance for the exact dates, as this changes each year.
8:00AM to 7:30PM, although do note that the ticket office closes at 6:00PM.
Adult admission is €16, and you may be able to get a special price for groups of more than 20 people.
Guide was very nice but not very informative - keep asking us if we had questions. He should have had a plan in place and telling us about where we were going and about Amsterdam, etc. Cheese place quick and nice however it is a place they stop so you will spend money. The windmill village had this same type of cheese demonstration. Not enough time in the windmills to visit them all and we did not even get to see the wooden shoe maker because our guide asked us to wait until the end and then 3 buses showed up and he said you can wait but it will be long wait now and suggested we not. When we first arrived at the village there was no one at the wooden shoe demo and no reason for us to have missed it. Keukenhof was wonderful and we did have enough time there.
This trip was very nice! We sailed on the Kagerlake and saw a beautiful part of Holland. We went to see a windmill, we visited a flower auction and we got a tour at the cheese farm. The staff was very kind and made a delicious lunch for the group. There were a lot of things to choose from. There was cheese, salmon, eggs, bacon, meatballs and all sorts of bread. It was a great trip and I took a lot of photo’s to keep the memories! I would highly recommend this trip. Huge compliment to our tourguide Daniel who was very kind and told us everything. Thing I liked the most about this trip was the fact that they showed us all the hidden treasures in 1 day without you feeling rushed. We had enough time on every stop and the bus/boat was very comfortable.
Bus driver and tour guide very good. There were multiple language groups on our tour which took away from her time having to speak in 3 languages when she could have devoted more time to share history of the Netherlands. While most of the tulip fields had already been either clipped or plowed up, they made an effort to find an area that still had a few rows of tulips left. Tour was timely. Enjoyed our canal cruise. Felt the narration via recording on canal cruise could have been more informative.
Approaching Keukenhof one felt a little let down. ( No flowers - But the weather plays a big role in the timing- An early hot (warm) spring ) . Once inside the Gardeners MAGIC starts playing their role. Magnificent displays , replaced fairly often, keeps the visitors enthralled. The diversity is a major factor and around every corner something new and exciting is presented. For such a busy place even the food and catering is vey good.
I took the tour with a colleague from abroad who suggested it. I thought it was kind of funny as I live in Holland. But I was really surprised how interesting it all was, and I would actually consider it for future visits of foreign friends. Last time I visited Keukenhof was... like 25 years ago, and I can see why people come over from all over the world, although it was end of season for most flowers. Nice!
