Full description
Standing on Castle Rock, an extinct volcano cut to its hard basalt core in the Ice Age, Edinburgh Castle overlooks the Old Town that nestles in its shadow.

Skip the long lines to enter Scotland’s most popular tourist attraction and learn about one of the world’s most heroic and bloody national histories. Your guide will tell you stories of the kings, queens, lovers and soldiers that lived, for better or worse, behind the fortress walls.

Despite its seemingly impenetrable defenses, the castle’s past is riddled with dramatic conquests, captures and tales of destruction. By contrast, today it is one of the quietest places in Edinburgh, far above the city’s busy streets.

In addition to panoramic city views, see the Crown Jewels of Scotland, including the legendary Stone of Destiny, the Great Hall, the infamous dungeons, and the enormous Mons Meg cannon. Discover why it’s the only place in the world to host a graveyard for dogs, and be mesmerized by the smallest shrine you’ve ever seen.

Our guide Richard was most informative and entertaining. Thanks to his rapid walking pace my girlfriend and I enjoyed a close personable interaction as most of the rest of our party were not up to a quick march up the steep slopes of High Street and the castle grounds. I might suggest in the future warning others to prepare for the rather strenuous activity.

It was the first clear and nice day since we got to Edinburgh so that was a good start. We walked from the meeting point along the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle which was not far. Along the way, our guide (Richard James) gave some good guiding notes around the city as well.

This tour was absolutely fantastic. Alasdair was incredibly knowledgeable and witty, and I learned so much from him. I've been to Edinburgh Castle before on my own, and I had a pretty terrible time; with a guide, however, to give the history of the different parts of the castle as well as the overarching history in Scotland (and the world) made my experience completely different. Fantastic tour, knowledgeable guide, 100% worth it!
