Whether it's a longing for a deeper sense of Rome's past, a chance to explore the underground tunnels of the city, or just morbid curiosity, exploring these subterranean burial sites is a must do, so here are our top five sites to see.

Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter

Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter

Christian martyrs Marcellinus and Peter are buried here, which is where the tomb receives its name. With a wonderful history and impressive art work, it's a perfect stop to make.

Catacombs of St. Callixtus

Catacombs of St. Callixtus

This is the most popular of all the catacombs, where you'll find the burial sites of many martyrs and 16 popes, not to mention early Christian frescoes.

The only catacombs still to contain bones, these are also some of the oldest, largest and most impressive. Included here, as well, is a 2nd century fresco of the last supper.

Fantastic way to see the catacombs and aqueduct

This tour was run very well. The equipment used is very good. The logistics of the tour were very good. The price was well worth the tour which included the bike rental, catacombs guided tour, lunch and a bike tour guide that gave us a good overview of the history. There was some riding in the city with the traffic, but I felt safe with our guide - Alessandro - at all times. I definitely would recommend, and may even do again when I come back to Rome with my family.

Exceptional with a passionate and knowledgeable guide

This was a tour I would highly recommend. Our guide was superb and she showed us some of Rome and it’s ruins outside of the ancient city, the catacombs and the Appian way.

Fabulous tour lead by a superb guide - Mikaela

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting experience as the venues were recently featured in a documentary on British television but more importantly our guide, Mikaela was awesome. The pace of the tour was perfect and it was clear that Mikaela genuinely wished for everyone to have a great experience. She is a very knowledgeable woman who pitched the information sharing exercise perfectly by including a little humour along the way and some comparisons to the world we know today. I absolutely recommend this tour which included 3 sites, one of which was outside the city centre, and thus required a short coach journey (all included) to explore the catacombs beneath the roads of the suburbs. Thanks Mikaela - you were excellent!

Awesome bike ride in Rome and the surrounding countryside

This is a great bike ride with electric bikes through parts of Rome and the countryside. We loved seeing and riding along the Aqueducts. The electric bike s made the ride much easier but it is still a good workout pedaling.

An insightful experience not to be missed!

Shannon our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and thus added to our overall experience. The tour gave us incredible insights into Roman life and Christian life after death beliefs. Our Insight into Roman street life really put the life and times of the Roman Empire into perspective. We loved it!
