Top sights in Rome
Whether it's a longing for a deeper sense of Rome's past, a chance to explore the underground tunnels of the city, or just morbid curiosity, exploring these subterranean burial sites is a must do, so here are our top five sites to see.
Christian martyrs Marcellinus and Peter are buried here, which is where the tomb receives its name. With a wonderful history and impressive art work, it's a perfect stop to make.
This is the most popular of all the catacombs, where you'll find the burial sites of many martyrs and 16 popes, not to mention early Christian frescoes.
The only catacombs still to contain bones, these are also some of the oldest, largest and most impressive. Included here, as well, is a 2nd century fresco of the last supper.
Featuring incredible architecture and with a fantastic history, it is well worth taking a tour to this catacomb.
The greatest draw to this catacomb is one of the earliest images of the bearded Christ. This tomb also originally held the relics of Saints Felix and Adauctus.
Some of the catacombs are closed on certain days of the week, so be sure to check in advance that the site you wish to visit is open!
A great many of the most important catacombes are located on the Via Appia, and it's very easy to access by foot or the hop on, hop off Archeobus service.

What people are saying about Catacombs of Rome
Overall tour content was very good and organization was excellent. Venues visited are exceptional and make the tour worthwhile. We missed the other larger coaches going to the Catacombs by going there first. Our group beat the rush at that venue. Very nicely done. Guide at Catacombs very knowledgeable and excited about her job. We had 2 French ladies on our tour that needed French translations which our guide (Antonio) provided very nicely. However, he didn't outline to the group very well that he would need to provide narration in English and then in French. A man from Miami, Florida become upset with Antonio giving 'too much' explanation in French. Thought guide was spending more time in French when he should concentrate on the 95% of the group that spoke English. Antonio should have given the English details and asked the English to move to 'next spot' while he outlined details in French. Keep English busy while doing providing French. Organizational skills need some work.
Niccolo was a fantastic guide. He was friendly and knowledgeable on architecture, history and culture. We had my 15 and 11 year old son with us and could have spent the entire day riding around with him. The route took us out of Rome through the country and afforded beautiful vistas and close up encounters with Roman history not available in the tourist choked city. Although the day was hot, the E-bikes and the shade made our ride easy and cool. There were also frequent stops along the way for water and exploration, not to mention herds of goats and sheep that were using the same roads we were. Next time in Rome we want Niccolo for the whole day tour to the aquaducts. Can’t recommend this tour enough.
This tour was run very well. The equipment used is very good. The logistics of the tour were very good. The price was well worth the tour which included the bike rental, catacombs guided tour, lunch and a bike tour guide that gave us a good overview of the history. There was some riding in the city with the traffic, but I felt safe with our guide - Alessandro - at all times. I definitely would recommend, and may even do again when I come back to Rome with my family.
Our guide was exceptional was we traveled outside of Rome on the Apian Way. Our 10 year old grandson found the experience to be incredible as we learned, rode and toured parts of Rome otherwise not usually seen on a quick trip to Rome. The electric assisted bike was a God-send for us on the several hills we had to climb.
By far the best part of this tour was avoiding the lines and having a guide to help you navigate a very crowded Vatican! Our guide made sure we were able to see and experience the highlights to the fullest.
