Top sights in New York City
Are you a newcomer to Broadway? Or maybe even a regular attendee? Broadway is a magical experience, but if
you're unsure of the proper etiquette for attending a show, let us alleviate any fears.
An obvious and simple code of conduct, but one that's often ignored. Make sure to switch your phone - nothing's more annoying than bleeping in the middle of Mamma Mia!, for performers and fellow audience members alike.
If you've observed the first rule, this will be no problem. But a bright phone screen in the audience is distracting for the performers and the audience, and any photos you try to take will likely be of poor quality due to lighting and distance, so keep it off.
Don't feel that you have to put on your best dress to be allowed into the theater. But if you want to make an event of it, then why not dress up?
Sure, quietly eating a few M&M's isn't going to bother anyone, but just be aware of rustling packets and loud chomping or you might get an unfriendly nudge from your neighbor.
Everyone's paid a lot to see the show - especially a multi-award-winner like The Lion King, so try not to hog all the space around you.
Make sure to check the time the show starts and plan to arrive 30 minutes early. If you need to pick up your tickets from the box office, you may need to arrive even earlier to allow for standing in line.
If you want to catch one of the big Broadway productions, make sure to book in advance as they do sell out quickly.
- When should I visit?
- Most shows are in the evenings, but there are matinees, too.
- Is it expensive?
- $100 is the rough starting price for a show.
- Will I need a guide?
- You don't need a guide for the shows themselves, but if you want to check out the historic theater district itself, a guide will be useful!
- How to get there
- There are several venues where shows take place, but the Broadway theater itself is on, well, Broadway in Manhattan, near 7th Avenue subway station.
- Additional information
- Book ahead to avoid disappointment. | Don't talk or make a lot of noise during the show, and make sure your phone is switched off!
What people are saying about Broadway, New York City
We didn't know what to expect but this was a really great activity for our family. We walked all around Times Square and learned insider information about the history of Broadway and Times Square, and interesting facts about different shows and performers. The New Amsterdam tour was awesome! We got to see what it was like behind the scenes and got to try on costumes from several Disney shows. Would have loved this part of the tour to be longer! Really great day!
A must do tour with a tour guide like Jenn ! With her knowledge and humor she made it a relaxed day, although you walked a lot, but time passed by so fast. And you got an absolutely wonderful impression of one of the most fascinating cities in this world. Two thumbs up ! Thanks and if I come back which I will, I'm gonna book this tour again with Jenn as my tour guide.
The tour was great. the history of this area was so very interesting and was very glad to learn about it. The guide was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable and friendly.but forgot her name. I already recommended this tour to several people.
Our guide, Jenn Andres, with New York Tour 1, was absolutely wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour very interesting. She was energetic, personable, funny and friendly and our entire group loved her and enjoyed the tour.
Loved both segments of the tour. First was walking around and learning more about the history of Broadway. Second was focused on New Amsterdam Theater and how Disney salvaged and remodeled this magnificent theater.
