Full description
Meet your guide to take the rail to travel to the center of Catalonia, where the Penedès wine region is located, 45 minutes from Barcelona. Thanks to the influence of the sun and the Mediterranean Sea, the Penedès has one of the widest varieties of grapes in any wine region in the world.
You will enter this idyllic spot with the local train while your guide explains the features of the land and the importance of its wines. Stop at Sant Sadurni D'Anoia, where in their fields Cava is obtained, the most international Catalan product. Here, you will discover the origins of this sparkling wine - equivalent to French champagne - in an entertaining journey through the history and culture of the town.
First, visit Freixenet, one of the most traditional cellars of the country, whose origins date back to 1861. You will dive into the history of the legendary company, one of the largest producers of cava in the world, and its guides will explain everything about the cava production process, from the first pressing of the grapes to the secondary fermentation. In turn, you will see how technology has adapted to the traditional method, on a train ride for its extensive underground facilities.
Finally, as is to be expected, Freixenet will offer you the chance to taste the different Cava of the house. Maybe you would like to purchase some exemplars in its store "Dolores Ferrer," which houses an assortment of products to meet diverse palates. A short walking tour through the center of Sant Sadurní ends to show the importance of Cava in the historical development of the area - there are more than 80 local producers spread over the streets. The boom in wine production in the late nineteenth century is reflected in the beautiful modernist facades of the buildings in the center of the town.
The morning will end in La Fassina Cava Welcome Center, a former distillery that now proposes, in its historical spaces, an interactive journey through the history and culture of Sant Sadurní. Here, you will understand why this town lives for the Cava for more than a century. La Fassina offers a 1,200 square meter journey through the world of Cava, its art of life and spirit of celebration.
